My tendency is not to hang too much art on my walls. I am more of a "leaner against the wall" person. I think it's a combination of liking the casual aesthetic of leaning, but also moving around as I do, its easier to pick up and go.
Seems where I am nesting now has some permanence to me so the other day I got out my hammer and (white) nails and started hanging. When I was done, the placement just didn't feel right.
So what were my choices.
1. I could settle and let them be, even though it just wasn't "me."
2. I could take them down, but then have to deal with the nails and holes in my wall.
3. I could take them down but cover up the holes with something more "me."

This situation got me thinking metaphorically, when are we settling in life versus when do we "make do" with a situation but tweak it into something special.
Many of the philosophies of Shabby Chic are about transforming other peoples "deciding not to settle" pieces into "magical make do's."

The trick is learning when we are settling or when we are just stuck in our pre-conceived ideas on how things should be or how we want them to be, versus taking a different seat at the table and just looking at things differently.
I'm learning how not to settle in being irritable when things don't go as I had hoped.
With the world of technology as it is we all become to reliant on machines. The other day my dryer decided it didn't want to dry anymore.

Funny though how when life forces up to do things differently we can then look back and think "why didn't I think of that before I was forced to."
When that happens, I make sure I take a moment of gratitude for having received guidance.

I have a weird hanging light fixture that I have inherited at a beach shack I am staying at for a little. I don't want to settle!!!!! But I don't want to make a big to do about it.

However, the making do took time to work out.
The galaxy of stars I landed up using was a silver garland made by Tjord Boonjte. There are different sizes and colors available. Originally I tried ones in pink and white. But they just didn't work. However the garlands arrive in a flat pack and once opened they were impossible to repack. So VOILA #2.

I discarded the unused paper lanterns on top of a Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Couture cabinet. Even though keeping the white or pink garland on the light space ship would for sure have been "settling', the "make do" is now an art installation in my home. So very beautiful.

A friend of a friend came over the other day and bought a couple bottles of wine as a gift. Not knowing I'm not a wine drinker. I didn't want to have to "fake drink", so instead I focused on the bottle. What could have been an unappreciated gift became a truly appreciated gift...2 beautiful bottles, with the best labels.
I didn't settle with my feelings, or honesty but I certainly had a magical "make do" experience.

Settling, making do......only we can judge. What appears to just not fit to others, doesn't mean that for us, its just perfect. And if not, we have the choice, let it go or change our seat around the table, and maybe with some tweaking and magical bits and bobs, or perspective it becomes imperfectly perfect...
PS: hope to see you at one of these events...........

I've 'made do' many a time and in hindsight, it often has stirred sometimes dormant Artistic expression and creativity... necessity is after all the Mother of invention! I'm an Artist but I had never worked with Fabric Art in my life until a fav Designer quit making her Bags that I adored... she had been an inspiration to me and not wanting to overuse my beloved collection of her bags I started teaching myself to make somewhat similar styled bags for my everyday use and whalla... a new form of Artistic expression was born and I'm loving it. Friends and Family began asking me to make them bags and it's a Joy to see others enjoying my Art as much as I enjoy making it! You too have been quite an inspiration in my evolution of decorating styles of our Home... now I have a soft Romantic Shabby Chic side to my decor in the Spring and Summer as well as my usual Gypsy Bohemian Chic style that I've enjoyed all my life and now use in the Autumn and Winter to feather our nest!

In our homes as well as in our lives we constantly have to make a choice about settling or making do.
ReplyDeleteOften the alternative takes more effort but generally speaking the rewards are more than worth it.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom on this topic.
I particularly loved your candle of gratitude.

I love it when a mistake happens...and it is then born to a new creation, artwork, or design...!!
ReplyDeleteYou have that unique gift to make that something feel special!
Showing us how to celebrate the warm and comfortable moments that we all have in our lives!
Thanks for being you!!

Oh, how I love this post. All of it hit home. Especially the happy mistakes or the why didn't I think of this before moments.
ReplyDeleteThank you for putting into words.
love this post. I agree that quite often just making do and making pretty is easier to do and just as satisfying as starting from scratch. My super favourite thing that I've ever done, was when I popped a baby tutu (why did I ever think dressing a baby in a tutu was a good idea?!) over a lampshade and secured with a diamante bow brooch. Looked so pretty. Just a quick idea, simple to do but looked so pretty.
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree. Washing always looks much happier fluttering on the washing line. Unless like mine the stupid thing keeps breaking and everything ends up of the ground!!!
AMEN rachel...i've been a make-do follower of your scrumptious content & color & design for many many years, in fact, i still watch taped shows of yours that appeared on HGTV in the USA back in 2000... anywho, there is such peace & joy in your simply lovely creativity...thank you much for continuing to share AND spark true to self genuineness, not settling!
ReplyDeleteI love this post. Making do creates simplicity and teaches us humility. I always feel better after making do and being accepting.

This post hits home with me as I have been sharing lately how I am going to use treasures I already have, move them around and let the sun shine on them in a new spot in my nest. I have stepped up to the challenge of just browsing and can honestly say making do has been very satisfying and makes me appreciate what I have even more!
ReplyDeleteRachel, This was a wonderful post. We are currently building a new little house that will be done hopefully in November. I loved how you made do... but made it "you". I have been making do for over 20 years in our home. But I have never made it "me". In the new little home I am on a budget and am not settling. I am making do and making it so very ME! I have always had dark colors and that is so not me! I am painting everything WHITE and I am in love with pink. I am even putting a little chandalier above the dining room table. Look at me! Being ME! Thank you so much Rachel for your inspiration.
ReplyDeleteHave a pretty day!
Kristin
What a beautiful, thoughtful post.
ReplyDeleteThank you, I actually needed this today.

I feel a deep connection to this post, Rachel! Thank you for sharing it. Never settle! Hugs, lulu
ReplyDeleteyes, yes, I totally agree with you. I don't anything on my walls at the moment. (smile)

I love how you say when to others it may appear not to fit, to us it is perfect, and only we can judge, how true. Life is too short to settle,in our relationships, life and homes. I would muchrather have a few loved treasures (like your products!), than too much "stuff". Making do can be fun and creative. Good luck at your book signings-you have a wonderful friend in Amie. Reading the blog she wrote about you brought tears to my eyes. After losing my friend of 35 years this year that blog shows what true authentic friendship is all about. Would love to see more of your beach home! Lisa xo
ReplyDeleteLove the "new" book and love the Junk Gypsies...really missing Texas the 5 yrs. I have been away, returning "home" to PA. Would have loved, loved, loved to meet you and have you sign my book! Best wishes for safe travels and enjoy a yeehaw good time with the Gypsies!
ReplyDeleteI've never, ever been a "settler" no matter what life has thrown my way. I am more of "make do" with a positive attitude behind it! And usually if you believe in the "make do", it turns into something, as you said, that you are so grateful for! I know you will have a great time at your book signings. My customers STILL talk about the day you did your book signing at my store. You stand out above all the others because you are real and caring! Have fun in Texas, wish I could be there.
ReplyDeleteTake care, Sue
Gratitude really does make all the difference, doesn't it? smiles.
ReplyDeleteI'm very taken with the fact that you stop and say thank you during the course of your day....and what a beautiful spot to stop in!
ReplyDeleteMaking do, but not settling is what I do every day because I'm always on a budget, and quite frankly that's what I think keeps us creative!
Always enjoy your posts!

Maybi you open a shop in Oslo:)
Really like this post, wI was extremely consumed last week so I missed this post. Funny how I came to it this morning, and it's relevance really fit into my Monday time frame.
ReplyDeleteI was just contemplating these things just this morning while I was leaving the gym.
Intesting frame of mind(s)......
Like the beginning quote and looking thru a different pair of frames!

Looking forward to having you come to my show this Saturday, Remnants of the Past, and sharing your inspirations.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Judy
Maybe I was suppose to pop in, I was just looking around my home, and wondered why I have an aversion to hang my pictures, etc...thinking I really need to figure out where I want to hang them, but then I realized the same as you did, if I don't like it there I'll have a nail hole to repair, so they are still leaning.
ReplyDeleteBe well,
Lisa
I love your blog..im starting to design myself now under house of lalka, all inspired by my grandmother..this contest might be a good start for budding designers like myself..check it out and vote for my entry if you approve ;) and you should enter too!

I am going to link to this on my inspirations page.
ReplyDeleteI was enjoying it, but then when you got to the bottles part...
just a couple days ago I bought vinegar, not because I wanted or even particularly like it, but for the bottle.
This was post was beautiful, Rachel...as is everything you touch. How thoughtful of you to appreciate those bottles. We (in general) are so wasteful and I too, stop to appreciate things like that, reusing whenever possible. I'm in the process of restyling my 1500 sq. foot rambler and you have been such an inspiration to me. Just wanted you to know that. You create comfort and 'home' in the softest most romantic style. *LOVE* If you ever have an extra chic chandy laying around, I have the perfect spot next to my fireplace. {wink} I just created a DIY Crystal Wirelier which although pretty, looks like the Charlie Brown Christmas Tree version of your chandeliers! Ha! "Making do" with life on a budget. :) And, I appreciate it so much more that way.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Jami
I think that quote is just what I needed today :)
ReplyDeletelove the quote by mr. cole :)
ReplyDeletenewbie follower, great blog!
Hi Rachel:
ReplyDeleteI just posted a blog about you, thought you might get a special hug from reading it, kind of like the hug you gave at Zapp Hall to my good friends Melanie & Karen...

I'm new to your blog and honestly new to you even though I've known "shabby chic" forever. I don't necessarily decorate with it but certainly love it. I enjoyed this post. Greatly. Very honest. Perhaps it will help some let go of some inner anxiety of how things should be.
ReplyDeleteNice to "meet" you.
Rachel, I love reading your blog. I really wanted to come to remants of the past, but I was busy with another show called Glitterfest.I am such a junk collector, I love using old victorian plumb feathers, old lace, old ribbons, rhinestones, victorian clothing fretwork etc. Do you know where I could purchase feathers that look old? Also do you have a stensil for your crown with feathers? I live in an 1882 victorian house and recently told old wall paper off some wall and left the old back side of the wall paper it looks really cool. I want to paint some black crowns with feather around the room. Also I am having an antique and art fair called tell me about the good old days in redlands november 5th and 6th.My Blog is Twowildrosesantiquesblogspot xo Lori Martin
ReplyDeleteRachel,
ReplyDeleteI love the " making do" sooo many times my "mistake buys" turn into something wonderful. Maybe only to MY EYE, but still truly wonderful.
That IS part of the journey.
