"Home" What It Is And How To Get There.

home

I have been thinking a lot just how much I travel.

Visiting friends and family, visiting my three stores, or just restocking my inspiration bucket. I have adjusted to finding what feels like home, in many different ways.

drizzly

The moment I arrive on the streets of London, my inner wiring is set. I love the sunny blue days, but only if I get to have the gloomy days too.

Home in London is a tiny little flat, all white of course.

Home in Los Angeles, a Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Couture white linen plump chair.

6000

Home isn't always about a house. Sometimes its just where our loved ones are. For me that takes quite some traveling.

friends

Or home can simply be a great vintage cabinet where we hang our hats......

texas.

Looking for inspiration takes me far and wide across the world. While photos in magazines or movies can be great sources of ideas, there is nothing better than experiencing different cultures.

travels

I wasn't sure what to expect going to India. I have only been there one time. I had an emergency plane landing there. (more of that later)

But the colours and textiles that I was able to see were so very lovely. So very soothing to the eyes. And the handiwork is just lovely.

india

Similar pink dupioni curtains in Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Couture stores.

Seems I have instigated a life with my work, friends and family that can only function with the invention of flying. Thank goodness for planes, except I have a crippling fear of flying.

fearofflying

From the moment I book a flight, (which is frequently), whether to San Francisco or Singapore I have butterflies in my stomach. From a week before travel I am watching the weather reports from my take off city, to my landing city. And all cities in between.

Often when I step foot on the plane I have to have lengthy talks with the pilots and review the turbulence report with them. I must have a window seat. I have exchanged a business class aisle seat with a window in coach. I am convinced me looking out the window is willing the plane to stay in the sky.

I never eat or drink, as I am very busy keeping the plane flying. And no one can ever talk to me. Unless it's the pilot who may have heard about my statue like demeanor.

But I fly.

From time to time I do a fear of flying course. I just completed one last week with Virgin Airlines.

200 like minded people attended. All seemingly normal. (I's was quite a sight all of us being herded through Gatwick Airport.) Past security as the "special group"

We all shared our particular fears. some I hadn't even thought of before. So now I have some brand new ones.

The full day of discussions ended with a flight to nowhere. We landed at the same airport we took off from.

boardingcard

We flew over London for ten minutes. The pilot talking us through every single noise and bump. if only every flight had a pilot speak all the way. It was the usual rainy cloudy skies, so plenty of bumps. When the plane landed, there was such an applause you would have thought we had invented flying rather than having just flew.

The day was wonderfully helpful. I have new tools of tapping on my forehead, confirmations that turbulence is of no issue to the pilot or the plane.......

But I still wish there were a magic carpet, or I had wings..........

  1. As a fellow nervous flyer I sometimes convince myself that if I concentrate it will keep the plane in the air!

The indian inspiration pictures are simply gorgeous, beautiful, worn detail has a lived in feel in so many ways!!

As a proud Brit I have to second your love of Liberty's it is such an institution and so beautiful in itself even without the lush contents!

  2. After tucking my daughter in at college in London, I flew out one morning in 85 mph winds. I could hardly believe we were going to lift off in it but thought oh well, here we go and we did. After not too many seconds we were up and over the winds - what a miracle flying is. I flew safely home and she began her new life - all is well!

Happy Holidays Rachel! I am glad Texas has a place in your heart. I hope to see you here again someday.

  3. Interesting timing of your post. My oldest daughter is at LAX right now waiting to fly to London or into Heathrow airport? I believe she will be gone for five weeks, doing fundraising for Arcade Fire band. I am more nervous right now, and she is calm. I have most of my kids around me daily, so I miss them when they are gone but Brande WILL be home for Christmas! Loved your post.

    Take care, Sue

  4. Lovely post Rachel...I love the images you have taken too. What helps me with flying is something I learned from someone: he said he didn't mind because it means he is flying somewhere else and that is exciting (he is English, by the way), so I always get excited and think about the destination...after all 5 hours transatlantic is really nothing in the big scheme...right?? hope that helps...:)

  5. Rachel! I too have a fear of flying! I can't believe you did a practic flight. Wow. What courage! Hope you are well. Faith is your strongest fight for fear! Keep it strong! Hope to see you soon. Lulu

  6. ooo, Please, there is no seat belt on a magic carpet and
I used to fear that those passengers would fall off!

My Daughter and I were excited to be going on our first trip to NY City... visiting my artist brother. We got on the plan all settled in, then the plane started to MOVE!!! OH! We both turned at the same time to each other ... we forgot that the plan would be taking off AND landing ~ our two not favorite things!

We took a car home to Chicago, but that is another story!!!

    Remember~ "...the friendly skies..."

  7. I will always get sick before flying... living far away from homeland isn't easy. Love the tapping techinique and I'm always practing it. Wonderful pictures, great inspiration.

  8. I just got back from my first vacation (to Cuba) that required me to fly. I've been to the airport numerous times, dropping people off and picking people up, but I never actually went anywhere but safely home. I love the airport but was a little anxious to fly. I was actually surprised and very proud of how calm I remained for the whole flight! (It may have helped that it was a pretty much perfect flight - absolutely no turbulance, clear blue skies etc...)

  9. I'm with you with the love of Liberty, it's a beautiful shop and I love to visit too.

Love the London street pic. I always feel robbed if I venture to London and it isn't raining. I feel that it always should. One of my perfect birthdays was spent in rainy London, munching smoked salmon in Harrods then getting soaked in the streets. I am not a Londoner, but it's somewhere I feel very much at home. I understand completely what you mean about home not neccesarily being a house.

    lovely photos, as always.

  10. Home. For me home is more of a feeling, not a specific house, it can be many places in life where you feel comfy... your favorite café, whereever your loved ones are of course.
When it comes to fear I use to remind myself that it´s important to let go of fears for things you can´t control, well it sounds a lot easier than it is... But I´m impressed that you actually do something to overcome your fear!

  14. Oh Rachel, yes the fear of flying.. I call them religious flights.. and can relate to sitting at the window & becoming one with the sky.. thank God for our faith. I don't travel the way I used to and and feel much better with both my feet planted on the earth...I once sat next to a pilot who told this to me & it helps maybe it will help you.. ne said " think of flying in the air like a boat on the Ocean, the sky has waves in the air just like the ocean does so when you fly you go with the waves...it does help me to visualize that... anyway.. smooth sailing & have a beautiful & sparkly Holiday.

  15. Kennsington Palace Gardens will always be my favorite place in the world, I feel like time moves slowly there and people smile often. Liberty is perfection. Home for me is a struggle as well, but finding inspiration through travel, opening my eyes to new cultures, people and experiences make being far from "home" all worth while. On gloomy London days, there is nothing better than being snug in a big white bed, fluffy covers, and a hot cup of tea, oh I miss it!

  16. I feel exactly like you on the flying thing. Won't let it keep me from going anywhere, but I am in agony from start to finish. I won't take anything for nerves, but I will drink like a fish. Kind of comforting to know someone as worldly as you experiences the same feelings!

  18. Hi Rachel, I've always had the fear of flying, and many other fears, actually for everything, I can't say I was truly living then, with all these fears. And finally, the only fear I didn't have : my husband dumping me, happened in the middle of nowhere ! That's how I learned that we never know what can happen, and no need to fear something before it actually happens. Now, as long as my kids are alright, I am alright. And I've been flying so much during 4 years after "the infamous event" that I actually started enjoying it. So bravo for your courage and your strength ! By the way, I love Liberty too !
On the other hand I am very happy to be in L.A. and not in Paris, since I can avoid too much rain...
    Happy Thanksgiving Rachel,
    Yael

  20. I also love those gray and blustery days!

I am from Texas and we did not get too many "London-like" days there, but here in the state of Georgia where I now reside, it rains and is a lovely and soothing misty gray, very often.

There is beauty and grace everywhere if one just has an eye to see it.

  21. Congratulations on facing your fears! If you ever need more help, the one course that helped me most of all is www.fearofflying.com. Captain Tom is a lifelong pilot and a trained therapist and the most wonderful, soothing man to talk to. I used to only to be able to take the train home (from LA to KY, not easy) and now I fly sometimes more than once a month! Anyway, I love your beautiful blog and stores...keep up the great work!

  24. I share your fear of flying and always am a worry-wort about the extensive travels my children take to visit their dad in...of all places...Texas. Texas is my home away from home, as I lived there for 17 yrs. and miss it dearly, even though I live now with my children in Pennsylvania close to family and where I was raised. However, a bit of me will always be in Texas and a lot of Texas will always be in me!

Being overseas was fascinating and I adore travelling, but I realised that my home definitely is where my heart is and my heart is at home, with my loved ones and memories.

  34. An expression for many purposes, Eleanor Roosevelt, "you must do the thing you think you cannot do." So, Rachel, bravo to you; scared to fly, but you do it, facing the fear.

I also do not like to fly and currently have no reason to take a plane anywhere, so I have some measure of relief. But opportunities will again present themselves and I will try not to let fear of flying deny me reaching out for them. There's nothing that causes more lasting regret than a lost opportunity.

In youth, I traveled extensively. In years since, I am grateful I didn't have the fear then; otherwise, I wouldn't have some really fantastic travel memories. But when chance for the real thing reappears, I want to experience it firsthand and make NEW memories. Can't do that if you never budge from your chair!

So, despite white knuckles, I think I'll fly, and be glad to know I'm not the only one who'd rather be down than up. Thanks for sharing and being human (although, in this house, we think you're pretty well perfect!).

(PS: Love the photos of India! Have always been intrigued of the longstanding "presence" of Britain in India and its influences on architecture, gardens, etc. Also, an unrelated aside, coincidental that Target had a Liberty of London collection earlier this year, so that was amazing, to have it and Simply Shabby Chic, too!)

  35. G'day Ms R.A~I hear you I have my fears of flying as well and don't do it often.I only get through it because I have to believe that if it's your time, it's your time and you will be taken even if it's a plane crash, car crash or hit by a bus you will be taken.Ugh! I know but that's how I get through Life~Cheers Kim

God bless you.

  40. I always confidently book my flights. I tell myself that thousands of people fly every day, millions of people fly every year. My nervousness grows on the drive to the airport, and as soon as they announce that it is time to board the plane, I have a panic attack. I begin to cry, my heart starts to race, and I am sure that I look like a lunatic...but I can't help it. Once I am on the plane I tell myself that I just have to make it until the pilot says it is okay to move about the cabin...then I start pacing from my seat to the bathroom until the plane is ready to land. When we are back on the ground I am usually ready to pass out from all of the adrenaline.

  41. I worked for a major international airline for many years and my technique for helping someone put the fear of flying into a better perspective is go to LAX and park off of Imperial Hwy or the Coast Hwy near the runways. Just watch the planes taking off and landing and remember that scene is taking place all over the world at thousands of airports 24/7 without incident. On a lighter note, I'm pretty sure I was on a plane with Doris Taylor (see your blog) and her continual pacing unnerved everyone on the plane! :)

  42. Dear Rachel,
It's such a welcoming retreat to come here and be taken away by your poetry of words and photographs. You are such a blessing to so many in alot of different ways.
I contacted your assistant, Jaimme awhile back to hopefully include you in my one-time magazine called,
"The Feminine Home". We tried to make it come together but our dead-lines couldn't make it happen. The lovely Sandy Foster, and her little gingerbread house is included in my magazine along with many others from Sweden, to CA to MA. It is a lookie if you would like to come by and take a peek.
