I am wanting to be cautious, to make decisions wisely so as to live a life with a peaceful mind and have a positive effect on others.

Was thinking how grateful I am to have open roads in front of me.

I have great appreciation that having freedom is a privilege. It comes with hard work, but it also comes with a price. Sometimes freedom comes from detachment. "Up in the Air" movie was a profound example of freedom.
Pathways and roads of course usually lead to doorways.

With travel as it is it is getting harder and harder to stay in the mindset of "the journey". But I do try. I so very value how my work and spirit takes me to different places. To me life's best school is travel. I still feel such a novice and I hope to challenge my curiosity this coming year.

Another movie night watching "Into the Wild," was such a great reminder of life's experiences and opportunities. Don't think I will ever quite live life in the wild, but we all have our little versions of "adventure". Just a road we don't know where it leads to is plenty.
Amongst all these big thoughts of adventure my mind flutters to more gratitude... that of just being grateful for pink.

And then from the comfort of pink my mind rests on love. The heartache and joys, but all good. Real life. For at the end, no adventure or color is an experience, without love.
Love can of course come in many different ways. I think its how we are open to give and receive is what is important.

And then a table ready for those special people in my life.
A mixture of linen tablecloths and curtain panels layered, create a lovely stage for vintage glassware and cutlery. Had to squeeze in a bench in place of chairs for a few extra friends.

And as I end this post.... I am in London.

I am in London preparing to open a little store in Notting Hill. (Another favourite movie).

Until...

Dear Rachel, I just want you to know that you are sooo inspiring! I remember checking out your books from our Fallbrook library when i was a little girl and I would just gaze at all of the beautiful pictures and dream of decorating my own house with all of the pretty pinks and vintage furniture and everything else that encompasses the shabby chic look and feel... I am proud to say that I own "The Shabby Chic Home" and I was just looking through it last night when I stumbled upon your blog.. I had no idea what was going on with your business and I am very sorry to hear it... You are doing such an amazing job with staying positive and beautiful! Which makes you even more of an inspiration to me and to so many other people! Everything does happen for a reason and there will be many more doors that open for you! Keep your faith in the Lord and keep staying focused on your dreams!

ReplyDeleteoh my Word. Now I HAVE to make a jaunt to London a definite. I've not been for a few years, since being a mum, despite it being just an hour or so away by train. Now I have the perfect excuse to go, and take gorgeous girl along with me. I MUST see your Notting Hill shop. Failing that, I would hope you'd take orders online? ;o)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous post. I love the doors photos. I wonder if you realise that you are actually a very optimistic person, and always seem to look on the bright side or find good about a bad situation? It's always refreshing to read your posts, and always, always inspirational.
:O)
Lovely post, thoughts and images. I share your feelings about disappearing phone boxes. Such a shame in particular the red London ones which are so much a part of that great city. The ballet slippers lovely and the dinner table set. I don't know if heaven is decorated in pink but I'm sure it will be soon after you ever arrive there! xx
ReplyDeleteWishing you well with your new shop in London, I'm sure it will be divine! Really enjoyed the photos in this post, just beautiful

ReplyDeleteIf life were a straight shot to the finish line, what fun would that be??
I just recently got home from some travels; the energy from a new city, the sights, smells and tastes are intoxicating as well as inspiring.

Dear Rachel,
ReplyDeleteSeems like everytime I need a lift your words are there.Your post and photos gives me peace and encouragement.Thank You!
First of all, Happy New Year Rachel !
ReplyDeleteMine began with a victory, the victory of the E2 visa I got after 3 years and half of hope, despair, work, but I did it now !
I am going to open my own store on Eagle Rock Boulevard while you'll open yours in London.
Speaking of London, I and my son, 20 years old, spent these last 48 hours in Heathrow Airport because of cancelled and rebooked flights, in the middle of long, long queues, the snow, the cold, the French strikes and probably, though it was not said, a terrorist threat. This weird situation allowed us to be almost homeless during 2 days, but with a business class treatment please, as we have been "upgraded" by our Airplane Company (BA).
I thought of you because while we were sleeping on our uncomfortable and cold chair, someone of the airport came and gave us turquoise - celadon blankets and pale green yoga mattresses for our comfort. So considerate. Some other voyagers got pink blankets, and I thought that the airport employees learned their Shabby Chic lesson very well.
I would have loved to be able to stop by your new store, but I was kind of struggling to get a rebooked flight...
While you admire the romantism of Paris and stay in London, though I am French, I do everything to live and work in L.A. We always want what we don't have ! But one thing is sure, our passion for the lovely things guide us wherever we are.
I just prefer the Los Angeles sun and its ocean. And I am in L.A. now.
My opening will be very soon and be sure, Rachel, you'll always be welcome in my store at 4704 Eagle Rock Boulevard, for visiting or even for signing any new book you would release in the future.
And I always hold my promises.
Your example gave me the courage to persist in my passion and to dream of my future.
Now, the true work begins and it's so cool !
I wish you a huge success in your London store, and 20 more years to come with Shabby Chic Couture adventures.
Yael
Your quote "when did privacy and quiet become devalued?" made my day... sometimes I feel I am the only one in the universe that feels that way about cell phones :)
ReplyDeleteAlways love reading your thought-provoking posts!
Always, always enjoy your new posts; I love this blog! The photos and words are all so...perfect!
ReplyDeleteI totally hear you about cell phones and the ear things. I am so, so tired of waiting in a line at the dry cleaner or the post office, being forced to listen to someone else's private, loud, intrusive conversation. It is the epitome of rudeness.
Another thing bugging me is the loss of nice letter-writing. It doesn't have to be a big letter but I thoroughly miss receiving a handwritten letter on beautiful paper or a lovely card. Hardly anyone I know is sending holiday cards in December. I know that postage in the U.S. is expensive but I wonder if the "save a tree" reasoning is sometimes a bit of an excuse to let go of one more piece of gentle formality in our lives. I think we have to take the time. E-cards on the web are catchy and cute but I would rather tuck a way a nice letter or card so that I can pull them out of a drawer from time to time, just to re-read, hold them and feel the textures of paper and embellishments, etc. I can only spend so long staring at a computer screen, hunched over a desk although if I didn't do it, I would miss things like your blog. So, it's balance...balance.
When you had a line of stationery products at Target, including scrapbooking items, I pretty much bought every single thing. Another thing I loved in Target stores were the sachets; I have them tucked all over my home.
I was fortunate to travel to London as a young adult in the mid-1970s and I well remember the red phone booths/boxes. I also loved seeing them in the British Virgin Islands in the 1980s. I can't recall the last time I saw an actual phone booth in the U.S. but they were never nearly as eye-catching as the U.K.'s! They did give a measure of privacy, though. A quiet oasis.
Dear Rachel,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the new Notting Hill shop! You are an inspiration to keep believing in your self.
I will be in London soon with my daughter so hopefully we will meet again (first time was in Paris at the Maison et Object show 2004). Love your new book by the way, I got it as my Cristmas present!
All the best,
Maureen xx
As always, wonderful photos. The beach, and bare feet in the sand is one of my favorite places to go. Love watching how each wave that rolls up on the beach is different. Here's to a great 2010!
ReplyDeleteTake care Rachel,
Sue

ReplyDeleteLove the photos, so peace full and romantic. Inspired as I read your post,to give long thought as to which doors I may find my self walking through this year. I am truly standing before many right now taking in how different each door is. Each inviting in some way or another. Which one will lead me to find the harmony of peace that I am looking for.

ReplyDeleteGood fortune to you in your new endeavors. It is in your nature to move forward and I can't wait to see what you will offer us next!
Is there any possibility that the entire Shabby Chic television program will be offered for purchase or is that not able to happen? I that wish I had it all.

Im a boutique owner (clothes) in Delaware? Yes slower lower Delaware.
I had to unexpectetly move from my previous popular location to a huge location with TONS of Shabby Chic possibilities!
Last week lost in Soho NYC I found myself in front of your Mercer St. Store at 605pm! (closing time)! I never knew you had retail stores and I'm thrilled to see that I can get future pieces for my new relocated store.
When I saw the peticote chandeliers I screamed!! (your managers probably thought i was another crzy new yorker. It reminded me of my years as a Southern Belle in Cypress Gardens Florida!

Hello Rachel
ReplyDeleteMy name is Frances Russell and I am interior designer in Australia. I have a blog site "18th century passions and obsessions and other beautiful interiors". I just wanted to leave a comment and say how much your work and books have inspired me over the years. I am obsessed with crowns as well! And chandeliers! especially old ones.
I believe you will go onto greater things and that this time is a new beginning. I am also very family orientated and that is the most important thing in life. I have started writing a book incorporating all aspects of home -interiors, family, events - everything that makes up the facets of our lives and how we live our lives. I hope one day to publish it with images of my work and home.
Your Notting Hill store will be stunning - I'll bring the macaroons!
Cheers and good luck
Frances Russell
P.S. Forgot to say have also just bought your new book - it is beautiful work and the imagery is gorgeous! Thankyou! Love the pink sofa on the front cover.
ReplyDeleteCheers

If I could find a way to cross the pond I would in a heartbeat! I'm so ready for spring as well- done with dreary, ready for hopeful with dashes of colour.

My goodness, I just returned from London and I wish I read this post a few weeks ago. I had a delightful time and Notting Hill just seems perfect for your new shoppe. Congrats Rachel. Next time, right?
ReplyDeleteHello sweet Rachel, I feel so honored just to be able to comment here, my heart is fluttering a bit. You have such a beautiful way of telling a story in just a few words or less. Oh how I wish I could make a trip overseas to London to walk in your shop!
ReplyDeleteI have a question for you I hope and pray that maybe you can answer for me?
In your Wednesday, November 12, 2008 post, there is a beautiful bedroom picture that you have labeled "Classic White" and it is the most beautiful bed with a white footboard and you have the photo framed in pink and at the bottom it says
"Stress has no home here" (there is also the most beautiful pale turquoise dresser to the right of the bed too. (I would love to know this painting technique too ♥) But my question is, how in the world did they do the beige/brownish walls behind the bed in this room? One of my friends thought it was wallpaper, but I tend to disagree and I think it is some kind of paint texture?
Is there anyway you can help me out a bit here and let me know somehow?
my email is: sweetea @ yahoo.com
Thank you ever so much ! I am on a mission here and I can't stop obsessing about this wall, and how I can somehow duplicate it?
Thank you so much !
Sissy
oh gosh ! my email (from the above comment is: sweetea820 @yahoo.com)
ReplyDeleteoh so sorry !
if you don't want to email me, you could always try to answer here too ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

Dear Rachel,
ReplyDeletewhat a beautiful post! I love the pictures and the inspiring words -- Thank you!!
May 2010 make all your dreams come true!!
Love, Sylvie
I've heard you've partnered with a new company (Brand Sense?) to design another line of Shabby Chic furnishings (not a Couture line but more than Simply Shabby Chic) that will be sold in furniture stores this year. I am looking to redecorate and will be purchasing sofas, loveseats, and chairs next month and I've been searching for this line of furniture but I can't find it anywhere!
ReplyDeleteDid I really read that you will have another line available in 2010 or did I dream it?
'So hope it's true! Nothing else comes close!
All the best,
Eileen
Rachel,
ReplyDeleteI just read this post as I enjoyed late-morning coffee. Everything about it is exquisite -- the text, the photos, the ideas. Truly amazingly pretty. You sound so confident and assured in this text. ALl best as you start the London store.
Sometimes isn't it great just to tune out the world and look around and simply be grateful. Another gorgeous post Rachel. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful blog. The pictures are fantastic. I think you have an artistic eye.
ReplyDeleterachel im so glad the world is brighter for you ,eventhough no one is perfect ,we all have our flaws, like shabby chic, imperfect in a prettie way,i have a question if you do get around to it,i just found this beautiful pink tule 1950s prom dress ,what is the best way to go about just getting it cleaned please let me know,it is so prettie, when i found it the lady told me she wore it to her prom and that she was suppossed to wear a blue one so she ended up with the pink a lovelier choice, this was at charlestwon antiquel mall in las vegas ,i always find great needlepoints thereTTYSLESLIECAMPOS4@GMAIL.COM
ReplyDeleteAs a fan from the beginning, I was sad to see the end of an era. But here you are, a phoenix from the flames, bright and beautiful. I am thankful. I would like to add that, in my minds eye, there are no walls in heaven...but pink is everywhere!
ReplyDeleteStay with light pink!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHello Rachel,
ReplyDeleteI love your designs! I buy your items through Target because that is where I can get them closest to where I live here in the Midwest of the USA.
I'm curious to know more about your education/career in design. Did you go to college and study design? I believe I heard you started working in design by making slip covers for furniture. I love what you do!! I was just curious about your design background because I'm intersted in design myself.
Thanks,
Angela
I've just come across your blog...I've hunted to find the difference between shabby chic and french country....I think it is the same, right? I need help and cannot find my answers... :( I love what I saw on your blog though Rachel! such beauty to fall into a trance with, wow.I wanna know and see more! Have a great and prosperous 2010!!
