As this time of year does for many, I needed to absorb the events of 2009. The saying of not knowing where we are going without really understanding where we have been prompted me to reflect where I had been. So that the adventures of 2010 could begin.

2009 turned out to be a year where I connected my heart to my head.
Such a short space but a long, sometimes painful and frustrating journey.
For most of my life both functioned very well but not always side by side.
It has been my year where I have had many lessons that have lead up to me having clarity of the true meaning of faith, pride, humility, strength, truth, trust, and compassion. With the clarity of these emotions I had to change some behaviors of mine.
All the years before that I have thought I could and should make the impossibles happen, or even what shouldn't happen, happen. I finally grasped that life does have its own course regardless of my will.
And my role is to show up, do what I know is the right thing to do, and to trust and accept the outcome will be what is right.

Shabby Chic has been my home to create romance, beauty and magic in my life.

Vignettes in my stores are moments of fantasy that can be transported into our real lives and homes. I find myself appreciating how vital the importance of feeding our eyes and souls with beauty and comfort.

I have always looked at theatre for my inspiration. For handmade details and unique palette. but the notion of a mask is one I profoundly connect with. Something we all need, from time to time.

With so much reality entertainment, HD quality TV and twittering instant news as it happens, the quality of fantasy through an old leather bound book or an imperfect grainy movie has been compromised for making things too real. Magic and dreams are being lost. We must keep our shabby world imperfect.
Sometimes in 2009 I have felt a profound sadness.
Sometimes loss.

Sometimes fear.
Sometimes really tired.
And this has lead me to surrender. And in doing so I have found the time for gentle gratitude.

Through everything. The one constant, is always to dream.

"To those who can dream, there is no such place as far away".
I included this quote in my latest book.
I hope you had a lovely Christmas Rachel, I know you must have missed your mum so much.
ReplyDeleteAs I typed this, my gorgeous daughter ran up to me, kissed me and told me she loved me! Unconditional love indeed. I am lucky.
Wishing you all the very best for 2010. You deserve a wonderful year.

Rachel, I am very inspired by your blog and was a dedicated viewer of your TV show Shabby Chic. I love your philosophy and your creativity and I feel a connection, a kindred spirit likely!

Dear Rachel,
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you and your family, and staff. As one of your boutique store customers I thank you for bringing the beauty of Shabby Chic back to us. Your posts are always very beautiful, inspirational and thought provoking. I recently purchased some of your vintage china and thank you for parting with some very beautiful vintage treasures. They will be cherished. As a mother, with 2 children the same age as yours I can agree that there is nothing better than just holding their hand. All the best to you in the coming year.
Your words have never been truer. This is what life is about...smelling the roses along the path.
ReplyDeleteMay you find the sweetest smelling roses.
Truly a beautiful post. Honest and heartfelt. 2009 has not been my best year (family break-up etc), but your post rang true with me for a better 2010, and being true and strong to myself.

ReplyDeleteHI Rachel,
ReplyDeleteWhat a year 2009 was, many seem to have had a hard year... I too have had a difficult time, and have learnt so much about life. The biggest thing I think I would like to share with you is.. to nuture and be kind to yourself. We tend to forget to do that at times. I truley hope that 2010 will bring you peace, joy, and that you prosper. May it be all that you could hope for and more. Thank you for allowing us to share your world, inspiration, putting yourself out there and showing your vunerablity, strength (in itself i find inspiring as the loss of our business to fire is slowly healing), grace and faith
Sending you much love
may god bless and keep you and yours.

I always thought New Years Resolutions were just for weight issues or annoying vises that needed our attention, but reading your blog lately, New Years can be a life marker where we really make a promise to ourselves to understand the lessons of the Year, and not go back, not repeat mistakes, work only to go forward from this place , this day on. Thanks again for taking the time to share this past year of yours, it has really been insightful to many of us, Tracy
ReplyDeleteYou are so right rachel, there is a time 7 a place for things. Tomorrow is another day,......to quote Scarlette herself!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you & yours! I will wish good things for you too!!

In looking back, it is the most difficult years that make us stronger. I have found that it helps toBe joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Romans 12:12
ReplyDeleteI hope that 2010 will be a happy and healthy year for you and yours.
Thank you, Rachel for highlighting beauty, romance, peace and gentleness in a world that so often is anything but. I consider all of your books among my very favorites. My favorite Christmastime purchase this year was my pink Shabby Chic stocking with the crown rhinestones! I.love.it!
Happy 2010. peace and blessings.

I love to read your blog, it's always so inspiring !
ReplyDeleteWe all have to believe in the future whatever may come. Until then let's all be the princess in our lives, I liked that so much so that's going to be my first inspiration this year !
All the best to you !
Best wishes from Anneli in Sweden !
I received one of the last shipments from Shabby on Fillmore. Mallory sent me three of your books as a late Mother's Day present.
ReplyDeleteAt the end of Treasure Hunting, there is a poem titled The Divine Ladder. The last lines are "In useless effort, then waste no time; Rebuild your ladder, and Climb and Climb."
When I read those lines in May, I had no doubt you were on the way back up your ladder. Never a doubt you would continue climbing it to your dreams.
Wishing you only the best for 2010 and beyond.
Sincerely,
Allison Arnett
beautiful...happy 2010. jules
ReplyDeleteNo noise. Perfect. That and pink ruffles. It is the first day of 2010. We have made it. Your new year will contain all you want and some of what you don't, but that no noise thing? I think it makes you strong - you are still here. Thank you.
ReplyDelete:) Debi
All the best for you in the new year!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your heartfelt thoughts and lovely photos. Wishing you a wonderful year in 2010. Your comments are little gems I take away with me. As I've observed previously, you have the gift...
ReplyDeletesweet, lovely, true...
ReplyDeletemay your 2010 be blessed with continuing beauty, love, and magic.
Such a beautiful and honest post.
ReplyDeleteI wish you endless happiness in 2010!
I know I'm reading this late but the timing seems to have been preordained by another need. And I needed to read this post. I thought I had my humility, strength, and clarity right here beside me. I guess I need to have more. I have put my princess in the back seat for a while now and she just ain't gonna have it no more! I have let too many people run me over for the sake of smooth sailing. Need to find a place of zen in the middle. Thank you for the moment of inspiration this morning- it came exactly at the right time.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful post.
ReplyDeleteI hope 2010 holds many Blessings for you.
All the best,
Eileen

Thank you for your beautiful post! I actually just used an idea from one of your books tonight in preparing for my daughter's first birthday party (from sumptuous settings - I made "bead cupcakes" with sparkly candles!) I love how you find beauty in elegant, simple, vintage things. Thank you for sharing your point of view. Have a wonderful 2010 and I will be following your blog for inspiration!
ReplyDeleteSometimes in business we are criticized for using both our "hearts and heads". I've been thinking that way for awhile now, and it has carried me through some of the rougher spots in life! We had a New Years Day Sale, and not only were we slammed, but it was so interesting to me to listen to my customers reflections of this past year. It reminded me that we are all on this journey together and that this new year, this new decade, this new beginning just may be shining a little bit brighter for us all!
ReplyDeleteTake care Rachel, Sue
Dear Rachel,
ReplyDeleteAs I read this post it reflects on the many things we all face together. and it is the beauty, the fantasy, the dream that in the end will show us the way to our true longings...
Wishing you and your family love, peace and tranquilty for 2010 dear friend.

ReplyDeleteI had so many things to tell blog friends about my visit to the Mercer St. shop recently, so tomorrow I'm posting on all the beautiful things you offer there. Do stop by if you have time - and be sure to let me know if I need to correct anything in the post!
Good luck with the London shop - I'm telling family and friends in the UK about it so they will visit when in the city.

You would have never known this, but from the moment your store appeard at the Domain in Austin, TX, it became my bi-monthly escape to a place of peace and beauty. I am a 10 year cancer survivor. I have learned what is important. At that time, Shabby Chic became my balancing place. Just time for me! When the store closed, I can tell you from my heart, that it was much saddened. I have 3 of your vidios and pop one in from time to time, as time warrants. I am a painter and teacher. We love to paint roses.
ReplyDeleteThank you, thank you! Is there still a sight we are able to purchase from? You have come to a good place, but you are missed in Austin.
Blessings, Barbara
Rachel, May 2010 be a wonderful year filled with happiness and love for you and your family!
ReplyDeleteWish I could see Your tvshow Shabby Chic, is it avalible on dvd? Were can I find it?

Best wishes for a Happier New Year Rachel!
ReplyDeleteA simple little sign above my door for 28 years reads,Bless Our Home. Nothing fancy. Not even antique, and I hardly notice it anymore. Guess I should start looking up before I leave and close the door behind me. Thanks for reminding me to see The Year Ahead!
ReplyDeletei do love doorways of possibility...& your pink velvet chair!!! may your year be filled with loveliness
ReplyDeleteHello Rachel, I have always loved your design asthetic. Your appreciation of the beauty of things that most people wouldn't look at twice is always inspiring. I need your advice on something. My sister is getting married in May and I am the matron of honor. I have found a beautiful buttercup yellow tulle dress with rayon slip (all one piece). It is in great condition, but I would like to freshen it by cleaning it. Any advice on how to clean it? I've seen lots of these types of dresses in your books and wondered if you clean them and if so, how you do it. Any advice would help. Thanks and keep up the good work. Good luck with your Notting Hill storm. Hope to visit some day. Ursula, Washington, DC

This was so lovely Rachel. Thank you for sharing so much of yourself and your process. I come to your blog to dream and explore, and I always feel uplifted and happy when I leave. Wishing you good things in 2010! I'll be reading to see what you are up to next! : )
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you! Thank you for the share. I have been a lover of your style for quite some time and I love how it has evolved.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the lovely share.

Rachel,
ReplyDeleteWhat you were saying about freedom and also about life in general was very profound and the photographs you chose to illustrate this made an impact on me. Thank you for sharing, Renee
yup, pink always makes me smileee!
ReplyDeleteI would love to offer you a suggestion I know will be a success. Open a store in Westport or Fairfield Connecticut. You will find success you can't imagine because this particular area is wealthy and recession proof. I don't usually comment anywhere but I could not resist because I just know your product and that very large community is a perfect fit. Without being too bold (and this IS a coincidence) my brother in law, David Gorbach is a business realitor whose company (Colonial Reality in Fairfield, Conn, & I don't even have the phone #) will work with you and find you the perfect space in this suburb of NYC. I am not trying to get him more business, just passing on my intuitive feeling that you will find much success if you open a store there. Good luck,
ReplyDeleteHi Rachel,I met Shabby Chic a few years ago and it's such a pleasure to follow your Blog! It always give nice inspirations! I'm just starting refinishing old furniture and I just love what I do. I was just waiting the kids to grow a little older to start. All the best for you always!
