Happiness and Laughter

HappinessArt

This past month simply flew by.

I have been criss-crossing California on my book tour. From Orange County to San Diego to Santa Barbara to San Francisco.

Virtually every event went hours longer than planned. Meeting and talking to 100's of Shabby Chic people. It was a lovely experience for me and I thank all who came. And all the lovely little gifts I was given.

I drove from county to county so I could also do some antiquing. And I came back with a wonderful load of treasures each time.

Findings

I have been driving the highways from antique malls to antique stores for years. I love everything about a road trip. Gives me a chance to listen to music while I drive through farmlands and lovely little American towns. It's pure joy for me.

flakeydoors

I feel myself prioritizing choices and re-evaluating what is important to me.

TeaTime

And I find in both my personal and business life it is the quality, the little details that I am protecting. The bigger picture of life isn't my focus at the moment. I am finding the quiet unsung heroes in my life most important. The little authentic things are the basis of my relationships and Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Couture.

components

I am finding that my customer is really wanting to be educated by how my sofas are built. Many elements go into creating these mushy, comfy, customized, bespoke heirlooms. The little tacks have just an important a job and the big strong coils. Customers are appreciating knowing these pieces can be passed onto their children. From an aesthetic and quality standpoint they are timeless and classic.

Jewel

Not all people are looking for big items. But they are taking the time in my shop to discover the little quiet details too. I buy these broaches and use them for napkin or tablecloth adornments. This is my Marie Antoinette moment. So affordable but priceless

Magic

Getting back to this part of my world is pure joy and giggles. It's the romance of my life. My imagination is endless and forever evolving. And once again, my stores in Los Angeles and New York has all the yumminess. Click to stores.

smokeypalette

While white anything is always a favourite, playing with dyes is so satisfying. Teals, dusty pinks and neutrals are my colors of choice right now.

ChinaPlate

With so many ruffles the dye came out a little irregular but adds to the character. Perfect platform for my new dinnerware of plates with crowns and little Fleur de Lys. All very subtle and quiet but makes such a statement.

SmelltheRose

Throughout all the uncertainties and changes this year, flowers kept blooming, growing and spreading their fragrance. And reminding me of patience and law of nature and life. So many metaphors.

NewPalette

mercury

During the time my business was shut down, I reflected and imagined how things might be different in the future. A richer palette that I consider more mature and mellow found a place in my designing. A velvet illusion with rough dark woods seemed to continue my Shabby Chic design philosophy.

My understanding of why everything had to turn out the way it did has given me such an insight to faith. And from faith there is a key to pure joy. That in the end, if we do what we are supposed to be doing, in the way our path leads us, laughter is easy. And its lovely.

  3. Again, so good to see you in person and buy your book. Your lecture will always be such a special thing for me, my husband, my mom and my 2 kiddos that were embarassingly loud. :(

  11. Hi Rachel,
I am glad to have been a part of your Californian "Tour", as I met you at your Montana Avenue store and had a wonderful time that evening with my 20 years old son, who is not especially "Shabby Chic" but who loved to test every of your sofas.
I am right now waiting for my working visa in Paris before opening my own store on Eagle Rock Boulevard. To wait like that is rather boring and also very frightening, but watching your last book and your videos, browsing the French flea markets, give me a lot of courage.
So thank you for your so inspiring work. Once open, I will be the first one to invite you for a signature of your next book, hoping there will be many other Rachel Ashwell books !
In the meantime, if you need anything from the French flea markets, you're welcome to ask, it will be a pleasure for me to search for you, as I think I mostly understand your taste and quite agree with your state of mind.

I hope being back soon and to have the opportunity to see your goodies at your Santa Monica store again. And also to sleep again in your wonderful sofas...
    All my best,
Yael (your customer with the very terrible French accent !)

  14. Yjat was a great post full with nice soft colors... although I don;t use the colors in my house a lot I do love them... especially like the ones on the doors... I like your idea of saying doors to nowhere, I wonder how you would call all the old shutters I have a around my house ;)

  15. To Rachel (and anyone who has an answer),

First off, I must say I am BEYOND inspired by your work Rachel. I always loved and leaned towards this "type" of design, but really never knew what it was called or how to incorporate all the things that I wanted to. Your new book helped me greatly and the photos were remarkable to soak in. Thank you! And, it's great to see you writing again.

I had a question, however, on the cover of your new book, there is a FABULOUS pillow-- a pink velvet (I think)toss pillow. Is this item available for purchase? Did you make it? It's sooo beautiful! Hope someone can let me know. It closely resembles the pillow in this post.

    Thanks!

Anyway, I was too chicken to talk to you! Or take pictures of your beautiful store for my blog. But I did buy your book, and I love it!!! Your store is beautiful, I will definitely be back for a visit!!

  18. Hi Rachel,
Thank you for taking the time to hold a book signing at Maison Reve. I brought my mom (from Montana) and two daughters. It was such a pleasure to get to meet you and also to hear your story. I have always been so happy with all of my Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Furniture, and have always thought so much of you, so to tell you the truth I was a little nervous about getting to meet you, I didn't want to be disappointed, I was so glad that I did. You are a very neat person, beautiful on the inside and out. Thank you for sharing all that you did with us that night. It will be an event my mom, and two daughters will remember forever. (It was the highlight of my mom's Christmas letter!)
    Love your blog!
    Thanks again and God Bless

  19. So nice to see you up and running again. Looking at your blog is like walking through a softly colored candy store. Very calming and beautiful. Thank you for sharing with us; we just love you so much!
PS I don't know if it was intentional, but I noticed God's name written in the above post with a little g. If referring to the almighty creator, I always write his name with a capital to give him due respect. He is pretty awesome, you have to admit!

  41. You Rock Rachel! My three boys live with me in my 900 foot shappy chic townhouse. My kitchen in pink, green and white and the rest of the place is a soft yellow with white trim. Their friends laugh when they see the place, but it is warm and inviting. You inspired me to decorate in shabby chich and I love it! I just wish I could get rid of the stinky boy smell.

  42. Hi Rachel, just wanted to say that I really enjoy your blog.. your 'style' was what I had been searching for and is what now gives me inspiration and joy to create my own soft furnishings. I love all your fabrics and hope you will bring out more to add to your collection. It's so good to be able to speak to you like this so far, yet so close. I believe things happen for a reason, even though we may not know what it is at the time.. and it usually makes us stronger and more appreciate of what we do have and more aware of what's really important to us in our lives. I am so happy that you are back and can see that you are happy too, doing what you love! take care and best wishes for the festive season, Maryann

  45. Hi again Rachel! Hoping your Christmas has been perfect and wishing you continued success with your shops and book in the coming year.

I visited, as planned, the Mercer Street shop last Tuesday.....and was blown away by the beautiful feeling that enveloped me as walked through the door. My hubby loved the calm feeling after the busy streets of NYC. He managed to sit peacefully for some time while my granddaughter and I oohed and aahed over everything. All the clerks were most hospitable and friendly toward us. We so enjoyed chatting with Colleen about her upcoming adventure with your company!

Rachel, you have such a fabulous shop and I fell in love with everything. I hope so much you will eventually have a catalog or online ordering for those of us who live far away. I'm posting on my blog about the Mercer St. visit as so many blog friends who decorate love your products. They will be thrilled to know you have many of them available again and those fortunate enough to be within commuting distance to NYC
    will definitely want to visit!

Looking forward to seeing you post again soon, meanwhile good health and every happiness to you and your family for the coming year.

    Fondly, Mary (ACROSS THE POND)
