Rachel's School At The Prairie

driveway

ON FEBRUARY 24TH - 26TH WE HOSTED OUR FIRST EVER SEMINAR AT THE PRAIRIE BY RACHEL ASHWELL BED & BREAKFAST.

As with most new ventures, whether it be a store, a book, a TV show, a bed and breakfast...... once myself and my village decide to do something that seems viable and meaningful, we just work out how to do it.

exercisebook

I have never been one to learn much from a classroom or instruction manual, so it was rather profound to think I was to have my own classroom, of sorts.

However, the combination of the inspirational qualities of The Prairie and my journey of my life and career, I felt I did possibly have some wisdom to share.

The focus of the seminar was Creativity (Inspiration) & Business.

Guests from all over the country started to gather on Friday afternoon.

magicalmeals

We started off with a little historical tour of The Prairie, to explain the hows and whys!!!!!

wheremyheartis

Over the course of the weekend we walked through the history of Shabby Chic.

logosoveryears

I shared my journey of the past 22 years of how my stores came into being...... and where we are today.

storewall

I have had openings and closings of stores over the years.

startingagain

RASCtoday

We talked about my books and TV show......and other pivotal points of my career.

booksandTV

I have so enjoyed meeting all that have been touched by my design work. I acknowledge the influence of celebrities spreading the word of their love of my work.

celebrities

I so enjoyed sharing how life has been my inspiration....from the sticky fingers of my kids.

jakeandlily

And of course no seminar of mine would be complete without honoring my mum. My teacher, my inspiration and the example of "the beauty of imperfection."

mumsworld

And then of course somehow always Marie Antoinette always shows up in my work. Either directly or indirectly. I love Sophia Coppola's vision. Sumptuous and quirky.

marieantoinette

I opened up my inspiration book, to demonstrate direct and indirect translations of inspiration.

tearsheets

My inspiration book is forever changing. Some pages are forever to keep pages, some get borrowed for other projects, I add, I take away, I ponder, I see different elements at different times.......but always I am guaranteed to be creatively refueled.

I explained to all, that sometimes I get inspiration from the sensibilities of others rather than their aesthetics.

exhibit

I was moved by the presentation of these ordinary elements, made extra ordinary by the focus of detail. Inspiring patience and appreciation of what is important to another.

sconceandcrystal

And then also how to see the power of the curve ball, the unexpected.

Time really went so fast. all who came were so generous with their patience to listen, digest, ask questions and share their own journeys.....

We watched two movies that have been very meaningful in my life. Out of Africa and Miss Potter. We all had hot chocolate and were mesmerized.

The characters in both movie demonstrated passion, disciplines, focus, creativity and love......

We all agreed we could have done with just a little more time. But then sometimes the best times are had when its not quite enough.

All guests stopped by the store on their way out.

prairiestore

I was glad that I felt I was able to just be me, I was proud of my village who "pulled it off", seemingly seamlessly.......

And lovely Grace made a take home token for all......

Sometimes when something is so perfect, its hard to imagine it can ever be repeated, but hopefully.......

  5. Wish I could be there too. I would need so much to listen to and learn from your experience. If tomorrow you organize something similar in L.A., I am ready to drive two days in the row, just to be there. In your store maybe ? Even if we can't watch the movies, it will be fine for me :-)
Hopefully, one day I will be able to visit your Prairie, I would love to.
    Gorgeous photos, as usually,

  17. I hope you have another seminar - I would SO be there! I could learn so much from your wisdom, creativity, and incredible ability to persevere no matter what life throws at you. Also, it is true that celebrities spread their love for your work. I first heard of Shabby Chic from Madonna long before I was ready to "nest". Being such a HUGE fan of hers I listened up. A few years later when I was ready to get my own place I revisited this look and that's when I fell in love hard for this amazing and wonderful world you breathed life into and so many of us now can find so much enjoy and inspiration in.

    Love ya'

  22. Rachel, I am still hitting re-wind and find myself quite choked up at times. I'll never forget when you came up to me and said "Hello",and who do we have here?...(good thing you had name tags for us) I forgot my name! I was speechless, and you know the rest...I was most impressed with your genuine kindness and that as accomplished as you are, you were so down to earth. I felt that your seminar was not only helpful to those attending but to you as well. I could see a healing taking place as you spoke of things that have now passed. I believe anyone can be successful but it takes a truly tremendous person to regain stability and start over. I love the person you are, the creativity you posess and the beauty you evoke. Thank-you for taking the time to share and give so much of yourself. Thank-you for signing my book.....it was so neatly written and yes you made me cry...as always. I shall never forget the entire event...the lessons learned through your journey will be with me forever as I take on the next chapters of my life. Heartfelt Thanks....grace xx

  27. Dear Rachel,

What a fantastic blog! I was so hoping to have been able to attend....but being a very busy General Manager of a boutique hotel in Jamaica prevented me this time!

Such an amazing journey, and so inspiring....I knew the seminar would have been just like this....so really pray you have another one later on in the year.

Best wishes and continued success on your creative journey.

  37. I just wanted to say that my daughter and I visited The Prairie after winding our way through Warrenton booths the other day. It happened to be my birthday and it is now a day I will always remember for its incredible beauty. The Prairie is exquisite. We sat in the shop and wanted to live there. We sat on the shop's porch and practically fell asleep. I bought some "final sale" sheets which I could never in a million years imagine wanting to return. In fact, I wish I had bought two sets! We also each got one of the gorgeous canvas bags that we have been longing for. And I got a t shirt. Everyone was so kind and helpful and we felt as if we were more than welcome to loll about as long as we pleased. It was just such a beautiful way to end the birthday road trip. Rachel Ashwell, you are so gifted in creating beauty. Thank you for sharing it with the rest of us. Very much appreciated

  41. When the Marie Antoinette movie came out, my best friend called me and said "You've got to see this movie. You'll love it...it's SO Shabby Chic!"
She was right...it is one of my favorite movies! I find so much inspiration in it. Isn't her country cottage just a dream? I really enjoyed browsing through your blog this morning. So glad you made your way to us in Texas!
