Beauty In The Barn

prettyperfection

These past weeks I have been hosting my dear friend Laurence Amelie and her lovely boyfriend Umbaldo Picasso in my home in Brentwood. They are both extraordinary artists from Paris.

Over the years from time to time I have sold Laurence's paintings in my stores but she is now quite famous in Paris, so it is difficult for me to get her work here. Every time she paints a piece it gets sold from under me.......... so I have been holding her captive in my barn and she has been painting every day........

captive

On her way to the barn Laurence would visually and emotionally absorb the inspiration from my garden.

The goal of Laurence's visit was to host a show of her work at my Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Couture store in Santa Monica.

Laurence mainly paints flowers and tutus. Both romantic, frilly and feminine subjects. However, her somewhat abstract hand gives her works a modern edge.

Tutus-ready

Over the years Laurence and I seem to share a similar evolution of our palette. While always embracing white and pastels, Laurence too is stepping into a smokier palette of browns, greys and darker blues.

When I first met Laurence about 8 years ago she was only doing flower paintings.

Today the barn is packed up as though Laurence was never there. A few happy tears have been wiped away. I am grateful to have evidence of her beautiful work, hung on the walls of my store.

Do pop by and see them if your passing. They are in our Santa Monica store now and some will dance and float their way across the country to the New York store by the end of April.

And in time we will have them on the walls at The Prairie By Rachel Ashwell Bed and Breakfast.

And now off to London to put the final touches on my latest book (due out in October) and then to see the royal wedding. (not going but will watch in on the tele with my dad). But I will take lots of Buckingham Palace and spring cherry blossom photos.....

  9. OOOhh! Love the tutus! They remind me of the one painter, whose name I forget, who would paint ladies dancing in their ballet costumes.

I hope to watch Prince William & Kate's wedding, too. I was an exchange student to Germany when Prince Charles & Lady Diana were married. Aaahhh! Romance is in the air, and your spring flowers look lovely in your garden.

    Happy spring,

  14. Oops ! I saw the new post too late to go on April 13th, but will try to have a look on the paintings by passing by, if I manage to make my way until Santa Monica... Hopefully, I need my "zen moment" again !
Yes, I've followed the work of this artist since a while, but though I'm French from Paris, I knew her through you, not from Paris...
Anyway, it is beautiful and lovely, and enchanting, and dreamy and fits perfectly with your style.
Great that you promote an artist's work, not so obvious nowadays.
And I am waiting for your new book for sure !
    All my best in London,

  18. Her art is interesting. I bet it takes forever for her paintings to dry! I do not paint like her at all.....I use very sheer color and mix lots of medium with my oils. But I do appreciate very different styles and compositions. Thanks for sharing, Rachel!

  36. Have you thought about adding the Facebook Like button to your blog? It is very useful for sharing your blog with everyone on Facebook while also providing a counter. I specialize in helping bloggers by adding the Facebook Like Button and getting rid of that Blogger Bar at the top of the page as well as adding a favicon. I would love to help.

  41. Her work is like a dream of Degas - very alive! Always admire an artist that can 'splotch' and have it come out planned but improvised. Really, it's an economy of line.

  45. Laurence's talent is amazing - and of course you gave her the perfect spot to work. Hopefully I'll get to your NY location again before they are all sold, or perhaps can visit the B&B some wonderful time in the future!

Have a great trip home - how lovely you can be with your Dad to watch London in all her pomp and circumstance. I'll not be far behind - arriving there 5/7 to visit the Lake District, then down home to Devon. Anxious for a taste of home!

  52. rachel, i just wanted to say that you i'm totally attached to shabby chic. the first time i lived on my own and decorated my little rental, it was your shabby chic program that guided me through the process of decorating. i have always loved whites and pinks and whimsical things and though my decorating style changed many times since, i find that now in my mid-30s i've come back to shabby chic in a big way. i'm so happy to find your blog. it's a jewel.
