One titled Genuine Luster asked me to do a blog on my personal style. Well this brought a major smile to my face as while I know I am very particular about what jeans, what boots, what top I do wear, they are all pretty much the same, so the fact anyone is interested, made my day......
So due to my lack of diversity, this will be brief.

99% of the time, shabby or chic, I always feel my best in my uniform. I loved the explanation from Rachel Zoe that it's important we get out of our comfort zone. Haven't succeeded in that yet. I have my fat jeans and thin jeans and somewhere in the middle. (that's where I am now).
I hated the high waisted skinny jeans and ballet flats phase.....just didn't work for me, not at all. I am most excited that I hear bell bottoms are coming back. Especially in jeans, helps make top of legs look skinny and long.....hooraayy

For me when I choose a top, I am very careful that the sleeve cuts in just the right place. A cap sleeve is death for me. A shirt that is too bulky with big frills just makes me look big.

I really have a hard time dressing up. I like to dress age appropriate, but not dowdy. Often when I go shopping I come back empty handed as mirrors and changing rooms become very depressing. I have found my best treasures to compliment my jeans are vintage. They don't particularly look vintage, just special.

One thing to note, in all the above photos, I wear the same belt, every single day of the year. I have a fairly edited closet. The less to choose is the least decisions to make. I have great association with the few pieces I consider my staples, and in some cases a choice of one is plenty.

For sure I am a much better editor at a flea market than a clothing store, so this is as much attention span that I have for this subject....... thank you for the
writer of Genuine Luster.....

Just love your blog. Went to your store in October. Infact went to Califorina just to go to your store.
ReplyDeleteHave some things hanging around my home.
I did a post recently called Simple Craft where I showcases my clothespins. One of the hearts from your store I have hanging on my wall in that post.
You are adorable! The simple kind of girl we all strive to be - difference is, you've embraced it! Which I love!!! Thanks for sharing...xoxo
ReplyDelete~tracie
Love this and I can't wait to see what you will do with your new Texas land! I know it will be fabulous with your signature style on it no doubt.
ReplyDeleteyou have great style... and i'm sure, no yukky bits..
ReplyDeletei need your latest book, that will inspire me. :)
I got some of the best treasures at your Malibu store... I miss it so...
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun post, Rachel. I like your style, whether it is for the home...or how you dress! You look too, too cute in your white shirt with the tuxedo front. By the way, I will be blogging about folks who have influenced my decorating style in my home, and you are one of the three folks I will be featuring.....soon!
ReplyDeletePretty in every single picture! Love your style! Have a blessed day, HUGS!
ReplyDeleteJust love your blog. You have great style and I am happy I found your blog...
ReplyDeleteSuper !!!!!!!! This post i like very much it is just the way you are.... xx Viana
Thanks for sharing this--very interesting!!
ReplyDeleteI have a sneaking suspicion you would make a flour sack look gorgeous. I love your style, I guess carrying it with confidence the way you do helps. So if your belt was to go missing you'd post a reward? ;-) lol
ReplyDeletecheers,
Leoni - Australia
Cowboy boots are a weakness of mine, I can't go into a boot store with out buying a pair. Here's an idea for those floral dresses you have for spring. Pair them with your vintage boots (preferably a taller pair) and synch the waist with your leather belt.
ReplyDeleteI'm a fashion design major and I'm constantly inspired by your furniture for my clothing designs. I also have a strong love for interior design. I live in a very old house that I have decorated in a french shabby chic fashion (a little more on the chic side than shabby) I found all of my furniture at flea markets, yard sales, and antique stores, then re-did them myself. :)
You are one of my greatest inspirations! I hope you have many more books to come, and I hope to get to one of your stores someday.
-Marybeth
Its all just gilding the lily I say. Your jeans are spot on, but damn it is difficult to get a pair juuussst right. I find that a good consignment store cures the worn in ritual. by the time I buy them - someone else has already made them nice and comfy for me.
ReplyDeleteI love to live in jeans and girly tops too.Your dress style is as perfect as your decor style..Love it!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Rachel, that was actually very interesting, because I always was watching your style and admiring how simple and elegant it could be in the same time. I was chiefly admiring your minimalism way (not so easy to do !) I am surprised you have three different size of jeans, because you looked rather skinny to me when I met you at your store in Santa Monica !
ReplyDeleteYou are going to laugh : we "had a conversation" while I was sleeping about three nights ago. I have a table in cherry wood, beautiful wood, but I was not sure what to do with it and I asked for your opinion. You answered that a good "splash" of white on it would be perfect. Then I asked you what about this Russian photo with the faded red bedspread and little boy on it, but I have been awaken before getting your answer, so if you could please tell us the story behind this photo, I would be very interested. I became obsessed with faded red since I saw it !
Thank you for this post, it makes me see things much differently. I already have the right boots bought at Minelli's in Paris !
Simplicity makes life so much easier and your blog is a true blessing for me !
As a fellow Texan, I'm a big fan of your boots and jeans uniform. And because you make it look chic!!
ReplyDeleteI thought your style would be very romantic, with floral dresses, blouses and tunics. Instead it is a very feminine and flattering combintion of rock chick and romance. I like it!
ReplyDeleteLieve groet from Holland
I laughed to myself as I read your comment about changing rooms and mirrors! I am always depressed afer doing the same thing and now only limit myself to just before going back to work, when the sales are on, at the end of the summer holidays (when I need new work clothes for the year). Those stores would definitely have more of my time if they made it more of a beautiful experience, like going into one of your stores. Why can't they be inspiring and indulgent too?
ReplyDeleteRachel, I loved this post, it really made you human, as we all age our styles can stay the same, yet altered age-appropriate.
ReplyDeleteAt 61 and living in the heartland(Iowa)we dress weather appropriate out here, style not so much as survival...I call my style FARMHAND CHIC...lots of layers of wool and flannel, long underwear doesn't work under skinny jeans...thick woolly socks under hiking boots or Uggs...hey, a girls gotta survive.
Again, thanks for being human and changing our world!

Thanks for the fun post! I've been inspired by your style for a long time and just wanted to stop by and say 'hi!' I love your ability to edit (in fashion and home)- it's inspired me to find the things that really work for me and get rid of the rest. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this post Rachel! I typically think I have such a boring wardrobe... but it is quite the same a yours, jeans and a tee! No belt, as my middle is too big! Oh, but how I'd love one, I know just what it would be. Perhaps it's time to rethink that part! Thanks for showing this plain Jane just how shabby chic she really is!
ReplyDeleteYou, Rachel are an inspiration! For I find that my face has retained a younger look than my age but oh Lordy, other parts of my body are frightening. Yikes, dress appropriate and turn the lights down!
ReplyDeleteI have issues living in sunny Arizona where women do not wear much clothing due to the heat.
Not me, it's 3/4 length sleeves all summer.
Loved this post! Merci Beaucoup!
You always look beautiful and classic. I know my guy likes when I wear a nice pair of levis with a feminine shirt. As much as I like some trends now and then I agree that one must dress age appropriate!
ReplyDeleteThe best accessory my Mom taught me to have was self confidence!!
I love them all, the casual-the dressy-the fun.. All adorable.. Best thing about jeans & boots..
ReplyDeleteadd a necklace or hat and totally changes the look, just like a room your decorating. The Embellishment makes the differ.
Love ya, Thanks for sharing.

How amazing because yesterday I asked myself about the story behind this little boy sitting on the red bed as Yael Bolender in the comment above!
ReplyDeletehi Rachel! i too LOVE your blog! and your style!!
ReplyDeletethis was a fun post, you look so sweet and girly in your jeans!have a great weekend!!!
ps. i just got your first book, from my best friend who lives in the states.. ( i live in finland) and just love it! it is so inspiring, thank you!!!!<3
Rachel, I love your style, always have. Loved and laughed about the fellow with the pressed jeans!! Did you go on the date?!! By the way what brand of jeans is your constant? I have yet to find one I love.
ReplyDeleteLove your style..by the way where do you find those scruffy jeans,(for us older girls)...went to your store in Santa Monica, it was great, met you in tx at the Junk Gypsy prom a few years ago, hope to go in the spring..i was wondering do you still make those cots and the slip covers to put on them..i didn't see them anywhere on your website?
ReplyDeleteI love your style so much. As a designer and shop owner myself, I find there is a fine line between dressing for ease and comfort and adding a bit of panache so my clients can take me seriously. You have it down pat. I really hope to meet you in Texas this Spring, I left before you arrived in the fall. Everyone who met you there and at the show in Nipomo just had the nicest things to say about you!
ReplyDeleteWe always look best when wearing what WE truly Love. I can appreciate a style on someone else that might not be my particular choice... but I applaud everyone who dresses to suit themselves, wearing what they Love, regardless of fads, fashions, what is allegedly 'in or out'. Your personal style always looks amazing on you and its obvious you chose what you genuinely Love.
ReplyDeleteDawn... The Bohemian
Rachel,
ReplyDeleteI have adored you since I was a young girl. I remember watching your very first tv show in America where you searched for your treasures. Your beauty shines from the inside out. Thank you for sharing this about your personal style. It is so inspiring.
I also have wondered for so long, what are your favorite white paint colors?? Would you mind sharing your tried and true favorites?
Blessings to you and your beautiful family!
Kara in FL
I love your defined style. It suits you well. Simply beautiful in every pic.
ReplyDeleteYou always look so great! Love your home style, and your wardrobe.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!

Too many clothes are a big problem. I keep thinking I'll go back "to that size," can't make myself get rid of it, knowing what I paid and having not gotten enough use from the item. In the meantime, though, it's clutter. And clutter is overwhelming. So, it's best to let go of the clutter and ditch all the tension that goes with it. Moderation, balance...with furnishings, clothing, collections, eating, etc. "Excess" of anything has time and again shown me that less can be more. Just wish I could practice what I preach. I have a friend-of-a-friend situation, where the woman dealt with her obsessive love of vintage jewelry, hats and bags by opening up a boutique. This way, she can continue to collect and accumulate and enjoy, but it's periodically cleaned out via retail buyers. Otherwise, she was literally getting buried alive with purchases. Maybe the boutique is just "enabling" that which needs some discipline and serious analysis but, in the process, she's had buyers who go away happy and she's glad the old things find new lives. But it does beg the question...and I ask it of myself...what hole needs to be filled up when we can't resist one more beautiful thing to feather our nests? It's one of the reasons I love Rachel Ashwell books...the photos of roomscapes are peaceful, because the rooms flow and are decorated appropriately, with lots of lovely things upon which to focus the eyes but not too much. Substance and quality. I'm trying hard to repeat, as I attempt to de-clutter all aspects of my life and looking at the material objects being relegated to dust magnets : Does it have function? Is it beautiful? Do I love it? How does it make me feel? Otherwise, if I'm not getting good answers, and even if it's unmarked or undamaged and has monetary value, it's just taking up space...space in which I need to be able to move and think and be.
ReplyDeleteI love your style and I love it even more that you have remained true to you!! That really is the most important thing in life:)
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I (along with our children) built a new home last year (mfamilyhome.blogspot.com), and I kept your newest book along with a couple others at my bedside. I found it served me well in making creative decisions (wallpaper, paint color, flooring, furniture, etc) that would stay true to the look I truly wanted. Do you find it easy to get distracted by all the images and varying aesthetic choices around us? What helps you stay focused and true to your own style?
ReplyDeleteLove this post on your personal style. Those flowery frocks look yummy! I wonder what your project is...?
ReplyDeleteHi Rachel,
ReplyDeleteThanks for this fun post. I love how you keep clothes edited. Not too many. That inspires me. You inspire me:) I so appreciate your blog...your eyes wide open for beauty. Blessings Rachel.
hooray, your writings on theater and writing much missed!
ReplyDeleteJust gorgeous. Wish I could fit into my jeans again soon...my little Lottie (13 weeks) stretched me out a little! Emma.
ReplyDeleteOh, you are lovely. Jeans and white anything always look great. Do love those dresses though. :)
ReplyDeleteI like your cowboy hat, and your blog of course! I will be in LA in April, I must go to your store!

dreamincolor/
Thanks so much!
PS....the store was gorgeous!
i love reading this about you! I too have my "uniform" where i feel most comfy! jeans and flats and a cute top seem to be what i wear over and over again. I realized that you actually inspired me and "gave me permission" to weat the same sorta clothes daily. thx you!
ReplyDeleteSo inspiring!
ReplyDeleteI can see you really belong amongst those furniture and doors!
Dear Rachel, last September my friends and I travelled from Canada to be at your book signing in Round Top. Unfortunately, some how the date got mixed up and we missed you.I lost my Mom a year and a half ago, and when I read the tribute to her in the new book, I cried uncontrollably and thought you could do nothing that would be more dear or fitting to preserve her memory, and the special connection between the two of you. Some twelve years ago, after visiting California I took home your design aesthetic, and you inspired me to open my own store, I was the first to have a shabby chic shop in our area.My mother was at my side every day, painting, sewing and generally living my dream with me. You are very special, Rachel,as evidenced in all that you are and have become.Thank you for so many design inspirations and lovely ideas to savour. Nella
ReplyDeleteI'm all for finding your style and sticking to it. I love my jeans, and that's all there is to it! Jeans and heels, that's my trademark! And I'm sticking to it!
ReplyDeleteHaha-- LOVE IT. Thank you, Rachel.
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog and I'm SO ecstatic that I did!!! I love this style, it's so relaxed, yet chic. Not boring or outdated, but simple and elegant. You really have truly mastered the art of beautiful simplicity. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteHello Rachel, Love this post. I'm going to dig out my cowboy boots
ReplyDelete(20 years old now....vintage just the way I like it). They should still fit...a little doubtful about the jeans though. :)
It has been said that a person with just a few well chosen articles of clothing is more secure than others and I find that to be true. I too have my uniform and limit all colors in my wardrobe to grey, white, blue and black. I do love your boots tho, where do you purchase such subtle but beautiful ones?
ReplyDeleteRachel you are so sweet! I love your style and how you have claimed it and stayed on your path so true. An inspiration! Looking forward to seeing what becomes of your new venture in TX. Much luck, you deserve it.
ReplyDeleteI always wondered why I've never seen you dressed in any other type of "outfit". Bravo to you for not trying to fit in to a "fashion" image.
ReplyDeleteLove your style. I am a blue jean person as well. If I put any thing else on I feel out of sorts. Nothing feels quite like my favorite jeans. I love your belt as well!! Just found your blog and look forward to reading more.
ReplyDeleteThanks for making me smile this morning!! I LOVE that you have the fat jeans, skinny jeans, and the in between! I think we all do. When it got REALLY cold inside "the store" this winter, I had some skinny jeans tucked inside my Uggs and had to ask my son's wife, "do these look okay"? The response was, "that is how you are supposed to wear them". I only wore them once that way! Can't wait to see all your pixs from your new project in Texas!!
ReplyDeleteTake care Rachel, Sue
Dear Rachel,
ReplyDeleteWow!!! I am always so inspired by your blog-writings. You have so many jeans! I was looking in my closet recently, prepping stuff for a donation run, and I have nothing nice to wear out that is formal because I basically ONLY have jeans! How nice to know, from your blog and all these other folks out there blogging, that jeans are THE THING.
I have a gift certificate now burning a hole in my purse for JCPenny's and perhaps I should go and get a couple of sale jeans...? I do like thriftshopping. Another thing, Girls: when you get ready to donate stuff, sometimes going through your donation boxes you refind "old friends." A year or so ago, when money was still extremely tight, I went shopping in my own garage and pulled out, you guessed it! Old blue jeans. :)
Oh! If you haven't been to a mall lately, I just found a store with my 18 yr. old daughter called Forever 21. It is Shabby Chic French inside!!! I wanted a chandelier!!!!! There were five of them in the store. Did you by chance design their store for them, Rachel? I still love looking back at an earlier book of yours at Jennifer Lopez's restaurant, Madres. The look as a bit similar.
Anyway, thank you as always for such wonderful posts. I do hope to meet you one day. Perhaps over a cup of tea. Cheers to a happy spring and lots of English roses in bloom.

Hi - I hope you can throw me a few ideas on this. I love your style. I am an avid reader and my bookcases are very shabby chic; however, books are books. They are not all the same colour, some are bright and colourful. I have over 400 books on my shelves. Most are non-fiction and I refer to them often. How can I make the books themselves fit into the shabby chic room? Despite the bookcase, the books come off as dark and attention-getting. Thanks, and please keep making your style available to us!! M
ReplyDeleteYou make it look so easy!
ReplyDeleteand that ocean view I'm sure is part of the ease.
shabbychic blessings,
starrydeborah
I have been a fan of Shabby Chic for years. It's nice to see you get
ReplyDeletepersonal. I have many things from your defunct Newport Beach store which I loved. The people that worked there were so friendly. I love the look. It's my master bedroom and master bath. I was one of the first to have lunch at Madre's, with my daughter and friends.
Simple, rugged and elegant...you are my inspiration in all elements of style.
ReplyDeleteRachel, that post is precious! I think you're silly to come away from a store mirror feeling bad -- you look better than most women in their 20s.
ReplyDeleteMy phone's always on for you - spoke with Lu, understand you're swamped.

You are absolutely lovely.
ReplyDeleteLove this . . . I feel exactly the same - less in the closet is sooo much easier . . . love boots and boot cut jeans . . . and I too love my "go to" belt! :)
ReplyDeleteYou always look great - love your style!!
Thanks for sharing!! - liz
rJeans are allways.. the BEST.
ReplyDeleteDear Rachel,
ReplyDeleteHow does an English girl have sooo many cowboy boots! Just kidding!!
Glad to know it was " boots in the beginning and boots till the end!"
That is what I always remembered about you from the first show and book.. those cute cowboy boots!
Sincerely,
Your #1 fan in San Diego,
Susan D.
ps yeah Ranch! here I come!!!
I cannot wait for the Ranch to open, I have not been on a vacation in 5 years, but now you give me the BEST reason to visit Texas!!!! I just love your work ! you inspire me everyday.
ReplyDeleteYou are so stinkin cute! Someday I hope to achieve even an inch of what you have achieved!
ReplyDeleteLove you lacy top and I like your own sense of style. Definitely chic and fab!
ReplyDeleteRachel I LOVE your style! I always have! I'm a jean girl (and a cowgirl) so boots and jeans it is. And since the economy is so tough, it's easy to do the boot/jeans/tees/tank looks while adding details for originality in accessories such as belts and necklaces, pinned on flowers, etc.
ReplyDelete~michelle~
This is a very Malibu style with a British Spin on it. love your belt. did you get it in La?
ReplyDeleteI had a good chuckle picturing the date with his dark pressed jeans....and bird of paradise????!! did the fella not google your name first?
ReplyDeleteGreat style....refreshing, natural, real...love it.
I love everything you do, I'm trying to order your Grand chaise on line. do you accept orders on line or do I have to go into your store. Thank you sooooo for all your talent. Dee Dee
ReplyDeleteYaY for this post! I keep waiting for that lucky boot find at the flea market. My day will come...RIght? :)
ReplyDeleteIt's all about the boots and the jeans. 501's are still my favourite as they authenticate what jenas are all about Architects in london
ReplyDeleteWhen I found you as a teenager many pink moons again, I adored your style because it was in tandem with my own. And this was during the big hair, bright colors and shoulder pads of the mid 90's. I have stuck to my style and now that I live in Texas,I appreciate it more. I do have a simple wardrobe for home and I love it. I intermix it with soft grays in the forms of sweaters or burnt out long sleeve t-shirts, layered over the perfect uniform. I have tried a few other "styles" and nothing works for me. Thanks for being genuine and encouraging and inspiring me to be so too.
ReplyDeleteLove people like you - you like what you know and you knp0w what you like, that's a great formula for interior design also, following your convictions.
ReplyDeleteRachel,
ReplyDeleteI have been a fan of your's since the very beginning, in fact probably even before that because I always loved the style even before you came along and gave it it's own identity. Although I tried to go along with styles that come and go, I always go back to the time worn elegance of Shabby Chic, whether in my home or on myself. Nothing better than soft, worn out jeans, boots and a romantic shirt or soft sweater for me too!! I am spending the evening in front of the fire watching a Spring snow storm out the window and reading Shabby Chic Inspirations and Beautiful Spaces :) Hoping this summer to go down to Round Top to shop and stay at your new place!!
