Learning to accept our limitations and imperfections I am understanding is as important as acknowledging our strengths and talents. Knowing what we can accept of ourselves as well as what we need to work on.

One of the gifts of getting older is honing our awareness of ourselves. While I have always been driven by my soul and passion, I have to take care to keep balanced, otherwise it all for nothing.

I love the sound of a ticking clock. To me it is a profound reminder of time, of which I am happy to be reminded.

We can design our gardens, choose our flowers, palette and placement. We can encourage and try to guide, but in the end nature will take its own time, and find the path that is best, and usually, it seems creates more beauty than we ever imagined. Often when I get in a tizzy, time in the garden, observing the architecture of all that goes on, calms me and reminds me, that things work out.
I find when I race through life too quickly. I don't even get to keep the memories. I have such awareness and appreciation for all that I have, so shame on me if I miss my own life.

I loved this thought and it inspired me to take time with everything I do so the memories are locked in my mind forever.
Another lesson in my maturing is knowing when to fight for something, and when to let go. When something flows, and when something just isn't meant to be. And to trust that.

For me, when I hit dead ends, I have learned to reach into my inspiration bucket, and see what speaks to me.

My "village" and I are all so excited at the projects that we are just embarking upon.....

And then my big little dream is finding its space in the world, when I wasn't really even looking.

The Ranch by Rachel Ashwell in Texas.
I have much to gratefully reflect on, so that I can make the right decisions as I venture down these paths. I am hoping all my lessons up till now will culminate in creating something magical and special for us all.......I will of course share each step as they evolve......

And lastly I want to thank each and every one of you who take the time to write your comments. Your words inspire me and fuels the cycle of rachelashwellshabbychiccouture. I wish you all your dreams for 2011.
Rachel, I am so happy for you. I can't wait to hear more about your exciting new projects! Please keep us posted about them. I wish you would add Birmingham to the stops on your next book tour. You have many fans and followers down here.

Hello Rachel. I enjoy reading your blog. I believe you to be someone very special who has that ability to influence and inspire all of us. It was you that showed me the beauty of something old and cracked and worn. Instead of throwing it away I set it in a place of prominance in my home. But I have to say that I liked you best when you did your first 5 books. I watched your television show religiously and loved every minute of it but your couture is just a bit too fancy for me and I find that I have to struggle to relate to it. But I do wish you luck with your ventures. You are someone that I want to see be very sucessful in life. I will always cheer you on. Good Luck to you!
ReplyDeleteWhat a perfect post, really hit home with me this evening. I'm driven with work and ways to make my store even better, staying fresh, new ideas and more. And I have realized that these past couple of years, my "drive" has really thrown me out of balance. That is one of my areas to work on in the new year. Can't wait to see your new book. I love your words, and again, thanks for the "inspiration" you shared. Just what I needed.
ReplyDeleteTake care, Sue
What beautiful reminders in your Post... and I'm looking forward to your newest book... what wonderful projects you have embarked upon for 2011!

HAPPY NEW YEAR and a BIG Thank You for so much inspiration
I just discovered your latest posting here and, I must tell you, I actually have tears in my eyes. Thank you for sharing such beautiful wisdom, images and upcoming plans with your fans.
ReplyDeleteWeb-surfing recently, not having the best holidays, and came upon a site about Victoriana and much adoration also for Shabby Chic. It's fun to see how ladies will get together for an occasion and bring out all the collectibles and beautiful old things, to set a lovely table and a Rachel-inspired space. They'd mentioned meeting you at a book signing and how personal, warm and nice you were to them.
Of course, this is easily sensed from how you write and keep this blog. Thank you for it. And wishing you all the best in your 2011 (and ongoing) endeavors.
A question I have, which I must have missed on a former posting, is how you developed a love affair with Texas. I'm West Coast, but have a lot of family and heritage there, and I also lived for a time in adulthood on the Gulf Coast in Houston. No offense to fellow Texans, but I don't love it so much (probably the weather). What sparked you about Texas? Was it the big "flea market" you'd talked about (some kind of annual trek)? Maybe you can tell us more about the Texas connection as time goes by!
oooh, I am sooo excited! I am also in Texas and will be anxiously awaiting news of The Ranch. I see a small trip in my future. . .
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love your blog and your books!!
~*~~*Beautiful post Rachel.I am looking forward to your new book too!Hope you had a lovely Christmas.Hugs,Rachel Noelle~*~*

ReplyDeleteHi Rachel, I am so happy to know that a new book is in preparation! Be sure it is already sold before even being finished ! At least to me !!! The Shabby Chic style is for me like my "zen garden" that I need to visit from time to time. My own style as a designer is, I would say, more... agitated :)) and colorful. But I still need sometimes my dose of Shabby Chic. And when all is too much in my life, I run to your Santa Monica store, to get cured and to breathe in "my zen space"... A little too much work these last days, I really need to go back !
ReplyDeleteThank you also for this photo of Paris. I've been a Parisian during my whole life or almost, and never saw these locks near the Seine. I am even surprised it does exist in Paris... You see this city as the most romantic one in the world, and for me, it's.. not that.
Your Ranch seems quite exciting too. You dreamed of having a hotel, that's it, you are very close to your dream now...
Happy New Year to you, Rachel, and I wish you more new wonderful adventures like these ones, it's such a joy for all of us too !
Yael
Rachel Dear,
ReplyDeleteYou made my whole week, month, year! I am so looking forward to getting your new book, and coming to your next book signing in NYC once again! Also, congrats to you on your newest Texas project. What a wonderful suprise to read that you will be able to reach out to people on such a personal level. I admire you so much and will wait in anticipation for your next yummy book!
All the best,
~ Steph

Hi Rachel, You are an inspiration as always. I would love to plan a trip from Boston to Texas to visit the ranch! I was curious if you had the opportunity to read Barbra Streisand's new design book? She is also quite amazing, I am sure you would enjoy it. Thanks for continuing to follow your path and bring us all along. Cannot wait for your 7th book!
ReplyDeleteWhat an exciting year ahead for you in Texas - can't wait to see what you do there at your B&B.
ReplyDeleteA new book, how grateful we are. Each one is better than the previous, if that's possible. Knowing that later this year, as Autumn comes round again, we can plan to curl up in a favorite chair with a cuppa and enjoy more Shabby Chic stories and beautiful images, is such fun. Oh yes, October is my birthday month - now I know what to wish for as a special gift!
Happiest of New Years Rachel, glad you had snow in London for your visit. Thank you again for the beauty you share with us.

Loisten to your mother, mother nature....she surely knows all about patience, forgiveness and fortitude.
ReplyDeleteGREAT Post! Happy New Year to you and much continued inspiration.
While I've been following your books and design style for many years, I only recently discovered your blog. Your aesthetic has played such a huge role in my life, but I also appreciate how real and candid you are with your readers. Your thoughts resonate with what many of us feel. ReplyDeleteGosh I love reading your blog. It always makes so much sense to me. This time around though, your timing was spot on!
I have been fighting to protect my business recently to the point where I was loosing far too much sleep over it. When you said that a lesson in maturing is to know when to fight for something and to let go meant alot to me.
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You x

ReplyDeleteHow about opening a store in Miami FL?
ReplyDeleteHI "Round Top Neighbor" - Welcome to Texas. My hubby & I stayed at the former "OutPost" while we were renovating our 1900's farm house. I love your style as well as the numerous Antique Venues in our area. I use our farm as my backdrop for many of my wholesale inspirational designs www.eblomedesigns.com Perhaps our paths will cross at the local Stone Cellar in the Square for a glass of wine! Best to you and your new venture.
ReplyDeleteDear Rachel, thank you so much for your creations and this blog spot! I love coming on and reading what you have been inspired to create, and about what you have been thinking. Soul candy, you know? I hope you will make some more table accessories to sell at Target. I miss the lovely napkins and napkin holders. I have my old ones, but would love some new goodies. This is something I would love to see in the next year or two from Shabby Chic Couture. Thank you, Barb C. xoxox
ReplyDeleteDear Rachel, I totally spaced in saying that I am REALLY excited that you will be coming out with a new book later here in 2011! Your letters to us have been an inspiration and I often will go on to see what you have written before I start my day at the school I work at in California. Anyway, I appreciate your telling us when you are hurting, when your business wasn't doing well, when you were tired or when your Blackberry died. Those little things make you very real for us folks who haven't met you in person. I hope the Ranch in Texas turns out to be a fun, relaxing place for you! My brother and his family were stationed there 12 years ago now and that Easter I drove out with my two children for egg hunts, a lovely church service, a birthday party, and lots of purple, white and red lupine/bluebonnets! Love the hills!!! One day I hope to have a chandelier of yours -- the one named after your daughter, I think. But that is a long time off...too many other bills out there and two kids heading into or are in college... (sigh!) Until then, I'll just keep living vicariously through your blog and books and all the lovely articles on your home and former homes that come out in the shelter magazines! Thank you for what you do and I hope you have a wonderful 2011. Happy New Year! Barb C.
ReplyDeleteRaquel,I know you today.

Hello from Australia and thank you for introducing me to the crisp, cool whites and pastels and allowing me to create the perfect haven I call home. With your inspiring books and videos my old often called "junk" now takes pride of place and is admired by visitors who instantly feel "at home and comfortable here". I found my niche in Shabby Chic!
ReplyDeleteIts taken a few years to perfect and is constantly undergoing tiny changes when a new treasure is found. Keep happy.
