Restoring And Recharging

3Stores

For the past few years my personal and business life has taken me to many corners of the globe. I have considered my Blackberry to be my lifeline to keep in communication 24/7.

However, when I was recently in London my blackberry struggled to get charged, and the light on the screen stayed on and on. Till in the end, it burnt out and broke. In the past I would have panicked at the prospect of missing the "little red light". But on deeper thinking, I realized my personal light had also been on and on.....and I too was burnt out.

So far I have not replaced my Blackberry but have been focusing on recharging my own personal battery, my soul....

Monet

I am always guaranteed to be creatively refreshed after a flea marketing trip. Having just returned from Brimfield in July. It was sooo hot, but so lovely. I filled a container with goodies for the Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Couture stores, had lots of cold lemonade drinks, and then stumbled across a lake that was as breathtaking as Monet's Givenchy Garden in France.

fleamarkets

So very often it's the quiet simple things of life that bring us back to life. For me a cold rainy day walk rewires me.

longroad

We all talk about the value of nature, peace, and simple living. Funny how sometimes we put every obstacle in our way to prevent this living. But it's always there for us......and I find I need these elements to literally breathe......

friends

Preparations for a dinner party should be effortless. Informal, but still eye candy. As usual I find this is accomplished with keeping things on the simple side. Just beautiful things from the cupboard.

Home

My latest book is Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Interiors. I focus on the many evolutions and meanings of a home. The empty nest, the everything room. Home can be many things, but mostly it must be where we go to recharge.

allheart

Emails can never replace stacks of handwritten letters, delivered by the post man. Gathering scraps for future projects can only be absorbed with flipping through pages
seeing the "real thing" in museums is treasures first hand.

And then finally, if still our heart and soul is missing a connection, there is always that special place, somewhere in the world, that puts us back together again.

nourish

So for now, I am reconnecting with my life, without my lifeline Blackberry.

  6. A moody walk in the rain sounds wonderful. You look great, Rachel. I bet we would all love a peek inside that inspiration book of yours. I don't have a Blackberry and although I'm grateful for the internet to read such inspiring posts as this I hate the way it steals time and quality in other ways. xx

  7. absolutely. Sometimes it's good to not switch on the computer, to ignore the phone, make a cup of tea and watch the birds in the garden.

It's good for the soul :O)

    What a lovely post.

  11. I was just taking photographs on the beach yesterday and noticed a group of young people all on the beach, all with their phones and blackberries texting away. It made me wonder if the next generation will ever be able to shut it off.

Enjoy your peace and freedom from the blinking light!

  18. What a wonderful and inspiring post! Love all the wonderful pictures. My BB died a couple of days ago and I have not had a chance to replace it but I am actually enjoying being without it for a while. Cannot say the same for the people trying to contact me though! We all occasionally need a reminder to slow down and appreciate our surroundings.

  21. It is a good thing to slow down....a few years ago I left my answering machine, cell phones, everything. We moved to Arkansas and REALLY slowed down. We have no regrets! We still don't have an answering machine and I don't have a cell phone either! Simpleness is good four soul.....
I hope your soul gets the nourishment it needs and you come back better than ever....

  23. Rachel, I found your blog right around the time Shabby Chic was going through its rough patch. I was going through my own challenges at the time. I was so inspired by your words of hope and courage and rebirth. I bookmarked it and followed all the way up to Feb of this year. For whatever reason, I forgot to check back for a few months... until today. I had another challenging week and in thinking about keeping calm and carrying on, I remembered your blog again. It seems that the way your little treasures find you, I find your writing and words when I need them most. Thank you for reminding me of hope and taking time for oneself. I am so happy to see that Shabby Chic and you are doing well.

  24. Yes, restoring and recharging our Soul is something we simply MUST take the time to do. You give so much of yourself and it is a Blessing to others... but it can leave one depleted. I'm so happy to hear that you are taking some time for yourself and to enjoy the simple pleasures in life.

  27. Great way to view things; I completely understand the loss of your phone with all the many microscopic bits of data.

Though the electronic age is one of time saving quick sending devices the old form of communicating really has no other substitute. People are non replacable and souls are the entrance into a persons vision and purpose for being.

    Good for you Rachel;

now get out there, blaze that trail and don't look back!

We are all getting lost these days in all the many technological traps.

Hopefully you will see after this break that you will not need to be as connected and will be recharged/reenergised as well

  29. I, too, have been recharging. As a teacher's aide, I have 2 mos. off each year for just that! Have enjoyed your posts for almost 2 yrs. now. Love your archway and think perhaps it ought to go in one of your stores - around an entrance doorway between rooms.

Thank you for dreaming up new goodies for us Shabby Chicks!

  30. Rachel, I am with you for slowing down and embracing more serenity. I adore your first photo: the lotus blossoming pond. I have been trying to not just think of creative, calming ways lately but to actually pause to do them, and embrace them as essential. Thank you for sharing these beautiful thoughts today! hugs, Jenn

  31. Rachel, Your post reminded me very much of a quote I picked up somewhere. I have no idea who pened this.
    Peace...
It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.

  33. "...so far, I have not replaced my Blackberry..." and, you know what Rachel, you'll be just fine without it. I think you're one very smart lady and I absolutely devour your posts. As I have said before, you have a unique talent of putting the perfect photos with your words. And, as you seem to live a good part of your life, with simplicity..."simple" also applies to your comments and, what I mean by that is (in the very best way), it's much more of an impact to be able to get your thoughts across with less than more. Not everybody can do that...I can't; I'm much too wordy, and then you just lose people. Anyway, your blog is completely special in all ways; I love it. Let the fondness of friends, family and fans...and indeed the foundation of faith...continue to add to your healing. Mending one's soul takes time but, oh, is it bliss to come!

The photo of Monet's Givenchy in Massachusetts was wonderful. Your essence. viewed through your eyes. is what creates your wonderful images.

I see the same when I sit on my balcony. 40 m from the Mediterranean Sea. and observe the burst of colors from a sunset, rose, purple,lavender,blue...

After deciding to edit my life of to many material things, I reached for your new book to be inspired by your words and pictures of how to live a simpler life. My kids are grown and live elsewhere and our 2 story house is now home to just my husband and I (and 2 Jack russels). It is dizzing that every drawer and cupboard is full! Thank you again for your inspiration and calmness from your many books.

  42. Hi,
I was up in LA visiting my daughter and we stopped by your store. It is every bit as beautiful in person as the photos depict in your books. Talk about recharging ones battery, I went away full of inspiration and ideas on how to make my nest even cozier. Love all the vintage pieces mingled in with the crisp white linens.
    Thank you Rachel.

  43. I so love your style!I have collected many of your books over the years and I never tire of them. In fact they stay in my head even tho I don't realize and I have staged parties using some of your elements only to discover a year later where my original inspiration came from!Fiona

  44. Hi Rachel, Love the Blog! Love your style! I'm dying to go to Brimfield. I love all things vintage, retro, or antique. There is a magic in owning something with history.

Love the photo of the lake! I, too like walking in the rain, it's fuel for creativity and reminds me of the Irish blessing "May the raindrops fall lightly on your brow. May the soft winds freshen your spirit. May the sunshine brighten your heart. May the burdens of the day rest lightly upon you, and may God enfold you in the mantle of His love.”

P.S. Haven't succombed yet to the pressure of owning a Blackberry or IPhone. Hopefully, I'll resist.

Looking forward to your next post...

  47. You and Shabby Chic have been such an inspiration to me over these years and I can't thank you enough! I mix it with Swedish Gustavian and it always works. I recently had a lifetime shake-up too and am now taking time to pamper my over-worked self and fix up my little cottage. I recently wallpapered my bedroom and it's very Shabby Chic. 52. I had the great honor of meeting Rachel at the Vegas market and listening to her talk. I have followed and admired you since your first book.
I want to say how fun it was to meet you and share with the others attending your shabby chic ideas. I have never been one for admiring actors and actresses or singers but you are in a class of your own. You are a normal fantacically creative person who has used her ideas and items that surround you into a wonderful business and home design way of life. Having grown up with divorced parents and never having money as a young married mom buying antiques and painting them has always been my passion. Even as you mature and can afford the nicer things in life I still go back to the antiques found at yard sells or at flea markets and my favorite treasures. Then you came along with even more ideas and style.
Your talk was so pleasant and down to earth. You are what you speak. I did want to make one comment as a business person on purchasing your line. I went back to ask more since I forgot while having so much fun at the luncheon book signing. How much we needed to spend to order your sofas etc. I was kind of disappointed in having to order so much. I have a small designer business and two other retail business and do not think I can afford to purchase that much at one time. I get a couple clients at one time not like large retailers. I think that is a hinderance to your business as well since we would have to purchase else where in order to get your look. Just a little hopefull note that maybe you might change buying requirements???
I wish you all te success there is and hope to see more of your books and buying all I can from your designs.
    Hope to meet again

  53. I will have to admit that my iphone is attached to my hip ... in these economically blue days my phone is part of the money making in our home. Emails that come in need to be instantly answered. Quotes need to be quoted and dimensions given ... design jobs need scheduling and shipping prices quoted.

I have two blogs, one I sell from .... so, while I paint, repurpose and redesign in my shed, I pray and sing and gaze at my garden ... these are my disconnect moments ... instead of the radio or the boombox ...

thank you for such vivid inspiration ...
stop over for a quick peek if you have a moment ...

I'll be praying for you while I paint ...

  54. I love reading everyones comments, it is fun to look at your bio's and see the similar likes of all of us!
I believe Rachel's following is from the love of pretty, soft and lovely things.
I got to meet Rachel last week and she is so down to earth and comfortable with herself. I found it funny how similar our beliefs, ideas and even fear of flying are all the same. I do not know what started her in selling her ideas but I am so glad she did. I have all her books and wait anxiously for any new books, designs etc.
Rachel if you read this please design or reintroduce your pajamas!!!
I think the women who follow Rachel all have the same ideas and love of design. I live for the moments when I have helped a client, family member or good friend to achieve the look they have wanted. The smiles and looks upon their faces is worth a million. Heck, I even enjoy doing a room for myself!!
I would love to spend a day with Rachel just talking about designs, rooms and sipping tea. I could listen to her ideas for hours.
    thank you Rachel
