Bucket List (Jack Nicholson & Morgan Freeman)

There is truly much to write of the past few weeks events.

SantaMonicaStore

New York opening party and book launch, hosted by Target.

NYStore

Writing my book was the easy part for me. Flying in the unfriendly skies to attend my book signings was my challenge and avoiding elevators, picking onion and garlic out of my food makes for travel to be exhausting for me and my companions.

The response from the a beautiful two page article in the New York Times has been global and extraordinary...Penelope Green, the journalist, captured our whole twenty years.

nyTimes

I can't help but grasp that it is way more than products that connect us all in this Shabby Chic world. I have been touched and humbled by every single person I have met these past few weeks.

My mothers anniversary of leaving was a few days ago.

And a common thought it seems when some form of life ends is "how do we affect the world during our time here". For me to inspire is a value important to me. But one we cannot contrive.

One lady I met in Vero Beach, Florida at my book signing held my hand and she said that I was on her "bucket list," and thanked me. That's a fairly monumental compliment and moment in my life. At times I have not escaped feeling dismissed from peoples lives, so this was an honor.

And it got me thinking of my bucket list.

buckets

When I left the book signing there was a double rainbow outside. That was an extraordinary sign.

doublerainbow

One thing that stood out to me from my signings was what a community that we have created. For me it manifested in some profound products we have in our stores. Beautiful illustrations by Lisa Mann Dirkes. An amazing lady with her own story to be told.

Lisa1

My Vintage finds are of huge value in my aesthetic and quality of my stores.

vintage

I am convinced our eyes and soul need authentic beauty, of which there is much. There is sadly much ugliness too. And far too much noise. Just taking up space in our ears.

For sure price point is not my focus, but value is.

And then we proudly partner with Target for affordability and I also share my fleamarket tips for others to do themselves to attempt to counterbalance my whole Shabby Chic world.

napkin

My stores are now my canvas and art and the fact that I was a choice on one persons bucket list has raised by bench mark of my art, to be worthy of such.

Inspiration to me is simply a key we find to help us see what is inside ourselves.
So if the inspiration is authentic and eyes, ears and hearts are open we are all bucket lists for each other.

How lucky we found each other through prettiness.

prettiness

And I will continue to bring what I have, for all to share. Whether a flower, a meaning or just a new understanding of my lessons. And I will be open to your stories and lessons too.

We will have a huge big Shabby Chic bucket, and we will collectively make the world a more beautiful nest, for our time here.

(Just leave the garlic and onions out of mine and give me wings so I don't need an elevator, or a plane.)

I was so sad when your stores closed, and now I am so HAPPY that two have re-opened!! I cant wait to drive out to Santa Monica!

Many blessing to you!! (and I love your blogs!)

  17. Rachel,

I must tell you that I have never been so touched as when I read this entry. You seem to put into words what I have been struggling to find the words to say.

"I am convinced our eyes and soul need authentic beauty, of which there is much. There is sadly much ugliness too. And far too much noise. Just taking up space in our ears."

I am battling the effects of this on my soul. Knowing that you have tackled and moved forward has given me strength and courage to find my self and place in this world.

    Much thanks.

  20. Dear Rachel, I think you have a feeling of your mother in the beauty of the double rainbow.

I just wanted to share with you this poem that I think says it all about what we leave behind.

Do not stand at my grave and forever weep.
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn’s rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and forever cry.
I am not there. I did not die.

I do not know who wrote this originally but I think it is beautiful and uplifting. I hope this helps along with the passing of time, hugs and blessings......

I thought maybe your book would be a beautiful repeat of your previous books but it was so fresh, and modern and new. I love where your going with all this and wish you nothing but the best.
I have already crossed your store off my bucket list and I always remember it as beautifully serene. Thank you for the beautiful book and great memory. Patricia

  41. Beautiful, as always! I remember watching your show on HGTV as a kid and now I'm graduating from college and moving into a 1940s bungalow which will, of course, become a shabby chic cottage. Target and eBay are the only ways I can get your charming fabrics, since Little Rock, Arkansas, is a bit far from your stores. But I certainly plan on buying your books and displaying them on my coffee table. I wish you all the best and thank you for partnering with Target to make your wonderful design sense available to us poor graduate students who still desire a charmingly shabby chic home!

  42. Rachel,
I never get tired of seeing pictures of your unmade beds. They look so dreamy; I want to escape into those pictures and take a nap.

I noticed that the lamps/lightning in you pictures always looks so soft and warm - how do you do this?

I just adore looking through all of your beautiful products. Everything looks so snugly, warm, and inviting. I'm so glad Shabby has come back again. I can't wait until things are available online . . .

  43. Thank you so much for letting us have a peek at all the new products. How exciting. I love, love the new logo--its perfect for our Queen of Shabby!!

I am so hoping that you will have a new duvet or comforter in shades similar to the Regent Park set that I had purchased at Mervyns--the bright afternoon sun coming through the arched windows in my bedroom completely faded my comforter and I had no choice but to part with it two years ago--I still cannot find anything as perfect to go with the shade of lavender that is on my walls and sadly, the paint is still perfect. I know I could do just white but somehow it doesn't do the room the same justice that amazing Regent Park set did!! So please, please, please do come up with something in lavender for me :)

  48. Rachel,
I've recently purchased one of your simply shabby chic slipcovers and i am full of anticipation to recieve it in the mail. i love the look of your new ones at target, with the pleated, ruffled look bottom, but unfortunatly there were many reviews of the fabric being too thin. So i found the white denim slipcover that is now not sold in stores on ebay and like i said, i am estactic! I also FINALLY purchased your book- many a afternoons were spent in a bookstore fliping through its pages while my baby Evelyn napped in her carriage. I just wanted to share the happiness that your items bring me and im positive many more.
    God Bless,
    Amanda Thornton

  50. Rachel,
First of all, your post always strikes a chord with me and always so meaningful, thank you dear. Secondly, I just wanted to tell you how lovely you are in person as well as authentic. My husband Jim and I were stunned when you walked into your NY shop on Oct 17th! I was so star struck by your presence that it was hard for me to put a sentence together! Hopefully I didn't embarrass myself too much! Anyway, meeting you was and still is the highlight of my life and I will never forget it. You are so right when you said, that "prettiness brought us all together." What an accurate way to put it. Thanks again for taking the time to talk as well as take a few photos and signing the book, I will be telling this story for many years to come. Enjoy your next phase in Shabby and so will the rest of us.

  57. Hi Rachael, I am in Australia, and am about to open a small shabby craft shop in my home, selling things I make mostly using your fabrics, and painted reclaimed furniture etc, it is so hard to buy your fabrics here, can you tell me if they will ever become avaliable in our target stores here in Australia, or if there is any other place other than the internet that I can buy your fabrics etc. Your shop and blog are awsome, and I know you will do well again, life sends us so much to contend with, but we get through it and come out stronger ar the other end. Cheers and best wishes, Debra.
