On Saturday September 12th the lights went on and the doors reopened on my Shabby Chic store in Santa Monica, California. Making this happen was a team effort of a few people who believed Shabby Chic had to return.
The handpainted sign of Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Couture was completed on Sunday.

I am focusing on authentic workmanship of days gone by. Hard to come by in today's world of automated machine made products.
Not one ruffle, not one crystal drop or turned wood leg goes by my eyes without scrutiny.

Most of the products in the store are manufactured by local craftsmen enabling us to offer custom options and paying close attention to every quality and detail.
Over the past few months when I had no idea of the future, myself and my teeny team continued the make magic with my finds. Even undeveloped I would walk into my studio and just love the colors and textures and I knew one day they would find their home.

Honoring my original concept, of creating heirlooms, every piece of fabric, cushion or slipcover is touched by human hand and perfected.

Our new catalogue is illustrated by an artist and feels humble and soulful. Initially a temporary solution until we have photographed our collection. But I love the authentic handmanship.

There is so much to share with you on the journey to now. I hope to meet with you if you pop by my Santa Monica or New York store.
Or perhaps at one of my book signings.
The first of which is October 1st in london. My dad is excited to attend. (They are all listed under book signings on my website).

I am hearing my book is selling fast. If you want a signed copy my stores are well stocked.
I so look forward to meeting every one of you.
Truly with the greatest appreciation to you all for standing by me.
Truly lovely!! You have the touch Rachel!
ReplyDeleteSo happy you will have another chance, and so many will still be working. I can't wait to see the new (old) store. You can't keep a good idea down. MB

From what you have chosen to share with us over the last few months, we know that you have been through the mill a few times. Having your wonderful and treasured business fold and losing your mum all in a short space of time must have been so hard for you.
ReplyDeleteYou are obviously a very stong person and I am pleased to read that you are coming out the other side with the positives of your new book and couture store.
You have loads of wellwishers behind you, wishing the best of luck! x
Rachel, I have a very specific question that I would like to ask you, via email, if that is alright.
ReplyDeleteIf you have the opportunity, could you please email me at:

ReplyDeletexoxo, Tiffany
Rachel, congratulations! As we say in Tex-Mex: Brava Chica! And BTW I ordered your new book from Amazon...it is scheduled to arrive this afternoon.
ReplyDeleteSuggestion/wish: A great place for a book signing would be here in Texas at the world famous Round Top, Texas antique market, "Marburger Farm Antique Show." It's too late for the fall show (the last week in September 2009...unless your person works magic) but the 2010 Spring show would be wonderful. Every blogger in the United States would blog about you and be there to buy yet another copy of your book.
I picked up the book yesterday, and what a book it is! I love the size of it, and how beautifully it shows the photography. I also had a girlfriend let me know the SM store had reopened. I can't wait to come by, and have to say I'm glad there will be more of the one of kind items, you sold way back when. So much better than all the mass produced stuff everyone else is selling.
ReplyDeleteWishing you the best, and knowing it will come your way!
I am thrilled!!! I LOVE your new book and hope to meet you at the book signing when you come to FL. I would love to see a Shabby Chic Couture website!!
ReplyDeleteWelcome back!!!!! I am so, so very happy you are back... I have missed you so much! I wish I could meet you... I would love to attend one of your book signing events. This truly is a miraculous year for Shabby Chic, and, I wish you all of God's good blessings! By the way, I just love, love, love your new name, Shabby Chic Couture! We all love you, Rachel!
ReplyDeleteFabulous! So glad to hear it....your books have always been a staple in my life - looking forward to getting your newest one. will stop by the Santa Monica store soon!
ReplyDeleteohhhhhhhhh!!!! i LOVE the illustrated version...i hope you keep a little of it around and mix with photographs...illustrations are yummy! many blessings!!!
ReplyDeleteAll Of us that LIVE the Shabby Chic Lifestyle...KNEW in our hearts you'd be back...Stronger than ever!....You just can't keep a Shabby Girl down!...Best wishes for your new dream!...Hugs...Lizzie

Well done Rachel,
ReplyDeleteI admire your strength, it's very hard to keep a good woman down. I hope your shop does very well for you and I am especially glad to see that your nurturing traditional skills.
We still make furniture in the traditional way and we know that there are not many traditional workshops left.
My husband Andrew has also trained many apprentices to keep these fine skills alive and we have more work than ever at the moment.
People have always and still do value hand made pieces. Have a look at our workshop blog here in Australia. www.farquharsfurniture.blogspot.com.
If we ever get to the US we will drop by and visit your new store.
Best wishes from Australia,
Coty Farquhar

Rachel,
ReplyDeleteI have added your blog to my blogroll. I have a little girl, after 3 boys and did her room in a shabby chic theme.
I didn't see another way to contact you:
I am getting ready to announce an advertising campaign on my blog and with the announcement I am going to do a BIG give-a-way. I already have two advertising spots filled and I am wondering if you would like to participate in either trying the advertising or being a part of the give-a-way? I would love to offer your new book since it coincides with my Big Announcement on Oct 1. I need to have a response by Sept. 19 to give me time to get everything set up.
The give-a-way will be a week long event and I will do a post each day about the give-a-way, showcasing each vendor. This should bring a lot of people to your blog/site. Some people will have special offers for anyone purchasing by a certain date (like 10 % off) that is up to you, if you want to offer that or not. I will get with each of the vendors to let them know who won their item and you can ship the item directly to the winner.
My blog grows each week and had been steadily growing since I started it. My page views have more than doubled in the last 3 weeks, my followers have also increased over 50% in the last 3 weeks. This blog is 4 months old and I was on the front page of blog rankings last week and am on the first page this week as well. For my first month of advertising I am offering a rate of $20. I will post the advertising when the give-a-way begins, Oct 1. I will create a button JUST FOR THIS BIG EVENT, so each advertiser can post it on their blog (if they have one), plus I will contact several Blog Friends, who have large followings and have them do a big post about it and post the button on their side bar as well to generate even more traffic.
Thank you for your consideration.
Cheri

This is truly the best news I have heard in a long time! I have been following your journey and while it has made me sad...as a huge fan of Shabby Chic, I have also been very inspired by your quiet grace and perseverance. I look forward to traveling to California from Florida someday to visit your store. Good things DO happen to good people, don't they?
ReplyDeleteCongratulations and many happy days at Shabby Chic Couture!
I've shopped in your stores in Santa Monica, New York, and Greenwich since they each opened, and have loved them all...I knew the Greenwich store was closing, but didn't know about the others and your battle with Chapter 11. I'm so pleased to see that you're moving onto Chapter 12--you have been such a part of my decorative gravity for so long, I can't imagine a world without you and your talented team. Good luck with your new beginning; I'll be stopping by soon.

Everyone who is lucky enough to have a 2nd chance in life. knows the truly special gift that has been given. When you think about it...is it really "given?" it usually comes with tears...sweat...and self doubt if anything will ever be "right" again...but if you hang in there..as you have done, Rachel...it will gift you with all you deserve...

ReplyDeleteCongratulations! I'm so very excited for you that something you love so much is back in your life. I wish you all the best and much success.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations. I wish you success and happiness with your relaunch. Any chance of opening a store in good old Blighty? Particularly in the East Anglia part of the UK would be useful!! ;o)
ReplyDeleteHave got your newest book, and it's gorgeous. The picture are all so beautiful, but my favourite page is page 6. The 'Mother' poem. I read it each time I pick up the book, and each time I feel tears sting the back of my eyes. I love it. I have a 3 year old daughter, and I like to think that in years to come she'll have similar thoughts about me.
I also love the way you describe how much your mum influenced your likes and tastes and styles. Your love for your mum and the pain of losing her shines through.
You have reminded me of just how much influence a mum has on her daughter.
lots of luck
Sadie from England
I am so excited that you are back!!! You are such an inspiration!!!

ReplyDeleteCongratulations! So glad you're back!
ReplyDeleteRachael, Thank-you for your beautiful eye and bravery. Both have been a great source of inspiration for me for 20 years.

ReplyDeleteI will def. look out for it in Holland!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations...so very pleased that you are back in our lives. The world is a better place with your aesthetic firmly in place once again. Vive le Chic!
ReplyDeleteI notice that the store you inhabited at the Domain in Austin is still empty and waiting for your return!! Hint Hint!! It looks like you could move right back in and seriously, we would all be delighted! Just in time for Christmas!
ReplyDeleteBest wishes, Rachel! I was so happy to hear of your re-opening. If I didn't live in Massachusetts {not far from Brimfield} I'd be there in a heartbeat!
ReplyDeleteI spent today at the hospital as my Dad was having bladder cancer surgery. :( Before I left this morning {at 4AM} I actually woke my husband to see if he had moved my copy of Shabby Chic Interiors. I was SO grateful he knew where it was and I could take it with me. I read it cover to cover and it was the highlight of my day {after the fact that my Dad's 6 hour surgery went well.} :)
It truly brought beauty to a glum and stressful day. Thank you.
Rachel, there was never any doubt that you would return to this love and passion in your life. I think everyone who has read your blog and been touched by your emotions and honesty will feel real joy at this new beginning. Take the time to enjoy, blessings always, Maureen www.arosewithoutathorn.blogspot.com

Rachel, this is by far the best post I've read since you started your blog. It stirs up so many feelings, but most of them are from my heart and difficult to put into words. Please know, that I'm very happy for you. I guess if we just "trust" our journeys we will end up where we belong. And again, "thank you" for coming to Country Roads to do a book signing. It means a great deal to me. Take care.
ReplyDeleteCongrats!!! You have inspired so many of us Shabby Chic'rs, glad to see your store is back :)

We just bought a signed book at the store on Montana and love it so much. I just love to open it at the end of the day when my little one is in her bad and enjoy the beauty of the colors and a lot of ideas that the book provides. We have been a huge fans of Rachel for over 10 years and have bought a lot of items from her store on Montana. When we found out that the store was closing our biggest fear was that Montana Ave might turn into another Promenade with a lot of chained stores but, we are happy to hear that the store is to remain on Montana. We just visited it and it made my day. Conradts Rachel. You are trully an artist and deserve to come back. Thank you so much for inspiration and beauty.
ReplyDeleteSuch brilliant news!
ReplyDeleteI was lucky enough to visit the Santa Monica store last october and it was beautiful! I treasure all the things I bought there.
I admire you for keeping your vision!
Lots of Love

ReplyDeleteI am so happy that your original store has reopened. I remember the first time I was in the Santa Monica store many, many years ago on a trip to SoCal. Dearest Rachel:
ReplyDeleteI am so glad to read about your new store. I know you have many fans, but I wish you can remember me,I wrote you from Guatemala some months ago. Your new store is like a light at the end of the tunel. Your new store remember to me that when the sky looks too dark it is just a moment before the sun will start to rise. I continue working in my public relations office, trying to attract more clients in the middle of this crisis. I continue working too at my craft studio, creating beatiful thing to sell. People like my creations, thanks God, I need more time and bit of money to invest in new materials, because I want to be ready for Christmas. All my creations are inpired in your TV programs about gifts. I remember them very well. Rachel, you inspire me and I thanks God for your return. I invite you to visit my website: http://dgiftymas-rmpaniagua.blogspot.com/
Here in Guatemala I could not find your book, but I hope you think to have a digital version for internet soon.
With love, Rosa Maria
Congratulations. Shabby Chic just looks like such an amazing place, and I'm glad that it's now back. So Rachel, when you get a chance, be sure to drop by Furniture and Design Ideas. I would love to hear from you.

Rachel-
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! We all knew that you would be back better and stronger than ever!
Very happy for you!
I just bought your book at Barnes & Noble yesterday and I am going to pick the perfect time this weekend, when all is quiet so that I can SAVOR, to read it, with a delicious cup of tea in a beautiful teacup because that's what you've taught us to do! Could there be a more delectable shade of pink than the fabric of the settee/love seat(?) on your book cover? It reminds me of the pink of the dress from the late artist Andrew Wyeth's painting called Christina's World, if memory serves me. I believe he said he was going for the pink which one finds on the smooth inside shell of the ocean conch. Or it could be the velvety petals of an old-world rose. Ah, Rachel; how good to have you back...congratulations. You, my dear, are a survivor and a thriver.
ReplyDeleteYay Rachel! It's wonderful that you found the strength to keep it going because you are a one of a kind. Go get 'em girl!
ReplyDeleteSx
amazing mazing mazing... love it
ReplyDeleteSo lovely...I like our style so much!! Wish I could go there some day..Greetings from Sweden //Katarina
ReplyDeleteHi Rachel, well I thought I'd pop in and let you know I now have your book in my hot little hands, I sat in a little corner, and read up to page 88 at this stage, couldn't read anymore as it was 1:00 am in the morning...lol couldn't put your book down! reading and studing every image over like a fine tooth comb, everything is beautiful as ever, I have held myself back from flipping pages a head as I want it to be a suprise when I turn the next page over, I love the dedication page, and what you wrote about us your fans, customers was very touching, because without you there would be no Shabby Chic, you have opened our eye's to true beauty....I have noticed in cyber land alot of talk you started this first, who came up with the idea.....to me YOU are the one that started and opened our eye's to true romance, beauty and for the love of Vintage and imperfection....congrates on your new book and looking forward to seeing your next, and once again thank you for showing me and all such a beautiful world.
ReplyDeleteWarm hugs
Kirstie.

ReplyDeleteDear Ms. Ashwell,
ReplyDeleteI was so thrilled to hear that Shabby Chic has reopened. My name is Lindsey Werk, and I have been an admirer of your style since I was in 8th grade, when a good friend, Kelly VanDyke worked for you in Santa Monica and Malibu. Since that time it has been my dream to be a part of Shabby Chic. I am willing to do anything to make this dream of mine come true. I love helping friends and family decorate in Shabby Chic style. My roommates have always felt at home in my comfy cozy room.
I am a Junior in college, and would like to know what it would take to work for you. I am a hard worker and would be willing to work anywhere at anytime. Please let me know if this could or would be possible. Congratulations on your reopening. I wish you much success!
Sincerely,
Lindsey Werk
