Bright Lights, Big City

RA Couture Art New

On Saturday the 20th our new home for Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Couture
opened at 117 Mercer Street New York.

It was virtually 20 years to the day that I was unpacking boxes in the
original Soho location, just a couple blocks away on Green Street.

This new location is smaller and parred down from our previous location
but actually quite similar to the original.

I am proud to say all of our slipcovered furniture, tables and bedding
are made in the USA. All of our vintage pieces are recycled from another
era, and none of our bedding is packaged in plastic.

Having to pare down our selection forces me to edit and edit.

While I have always had an appreciation for all products sold in
Shabby Chic stores, editing in this way has caused me to just be
left with a few chosen items that are completely my world.

The combination of this edgy fresh extension table along with the relaxed
slips of the dining chairs is everything that makes for magic, to me.

Liliput table 11

Working with local artists allows me to create product without any
compromise of design.

Product development is easy when its a car drive away.

In the case of this table I wanted the base to really take on
an authentic old paint . Not as easy as it sounds, but achieved.

And we can make it in any size, that's a treat.

Another local artisan, who is also able to produce any size.

I always like the flexibility of an extension table, but some
people prefer a fixed version.

Slipcovered sofas and chairs have always been the core of my business,
and always will be. Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Couture is able to do
anything when it comes to slipcovers, cushions and custom sizes.

However I have spent hours and hours and hours, coming up with what I
think is the perfect of the perfect, in relation to comfort,
beauty and function.

Every slipcover is under the scrutiny of Denise, our production manager.

The subtle details of welts and the draping of fabric have all been
carefully decided upon, and so too has the mush of the cushions.
That's not to say we can't tighten the slipcovers, firm up the cushions
and change the details to specifications.

But, the results of the furniture on our show room floor is based on my
idea of perfection.

When I first started my company 20 years ago, white denim slip covers were the uniform in my house, as with sticky toddlers fingers, white denim is the most easily bleached fabric.

Now that my children have grown I now enjoy our grain linen slipcovers.

Still totally inviting and the more crumpled the better, like an old favorite suit.

Even though solid neutrals are the basis for most of our slipcovers,
sometimes we step outside, a stripe is often a friendly substitute.

Knowing that some surroundings need slightly more formal furniture,
the Portobello collection sits well here.

willow rocker 4

Even thought classic and traditional often evokes old fashioned, modern fits
into our array too, so long as it's classic, modern and comfy.

soho sectional 4

My original concept of design was always children friendly.

Oversized furniture always inviting for snuggle time for my children and I.

Many memories have been collected snuggled into cushions or feet dangling, ever concerned with upholstery getting grubby.

Talking of sleep....

our bedding wall copy

For many years my stores have had a vast array of bedding contained in what we all called our "bedding wall"'

In my redesigning and editing of our collections I believe we still have all that is needed to create the perfectly imperfect Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Couture bed.

There could never be Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Couture without white and ruffles.

And not forgetting my roots, our union jack pillow is back,
with a new mix of fabrics.

I know you all miss viewing our products on our website.

I thought this would be some way to show you some of the loveliness
that are in the Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic stores.

Of course there are many more designs of our machine washable slipcovered
furniture, lovely, lovely twinkly lighting, candles and accessories.
And then there are our one of a kind vintage treasures of tables, cabinets,
mirrors and art. Handpicked by me through the flea markets. If you can't make
it into our stores the lovely girls would be happy to take photos for you if
you call and and tell them what you would like to see.

P.S. Darcy and August chairs will be back next week.

I have started my book signings now and will be at my Santa Monica,
California store October 8th. look forward to meeting you there.

Thank you for all your lovely comments about my book. I am glad you are capturing the essence of my words.

  3. Rachel I have everyone of your books and just ordered your new one - can't wait for the arrival. I can't tell you how many hours I spend just glossing over every page. Congratulations on finding your way back to what you love best - I look forward to one day having the chance to view your shops in person. Wishing you well on your new journey.

  5. I am so glad that the "Shabby Chic machine" works again ! Of course, I went already twice to your Montana store and felt the same pleasant zen mood as before, with "Imagine" by John Lennon behind. The second time, I took a friend from New Jersey who had never seen one of your stores, though she is a big customer of Simply Shabby Chic at Target's. She almost fell asleep in one of your sofas and she told me she knew why you had such a success. It is not only what you sell, but the relax way it is shown which makes the difference. Anyway, I could only leave with one of your big new candles so gorgeous, it is a pleasure to get in my home, just because of the smell, and also this little worn pale green frame, the only one I saw, and the only one which was in my budget frame.
By the way, I would really love that you think of little things, not too expensive for people like me who are not wealthy but who appreciate the good taste you have very strongly. Because we always want a little reminder of our visit to your store, and it is not always possible. Beside that, I love absolutely all. If I was wealthy, I would buy your whole stock !
I think I will be able to make it on October 8th. So see you soon, maybe.

  20. It's All So Beautiful, RachelTuesday, September 29, 2009

If I had a windfall, I'd hire a personal chef, put in a lovely outdoor swimming pool and furnish my home ENTIRELY in Shappy Chic Couture. Elegant, comfy, beckoning and welcoming furniture with accessories; feast for the eyes and sore muscles; sweet rest after a long day. A reading nook; a sleeping corner. How we're supposed to live as we de-stress away from the noise and the chaos beyond the front door. Replenish and restore yourself at home. To me, this is the wonder and relief of Shabby Chic.

  23. Dear Rachel,
I've been following your blog for months - today I dare to write few words...
First of all I want to tell you that women like You or Tricia Guild has been always my inspiration to try to make dreams come true - what means: to do in my life what I really love, to follow intuition, to believe in beauty...
I'm living in Poland - here for many comunistics years in the past - everything (houses, furnitures, clothes, etc) was ugly and dull. So as a young girl I created clothes and decorations by my own - what wasn't easy because there was nothing at shops to buy , no fabrics, no ispiring books, no interior magazins... Now situations look much better - but one thing hasn't changed: I'm still creative:)
I was sad reading about closing your stores and I'm HAPPY reading good news from you.
I always read with pleasure that you appreciate handmade crafts.
I know that you a very busy person - but I invite you to take a look at my blog one day:
    http://arteego-shop.blogspot.com/
where I show my creations: retro charms - little pendants in vintage style, which are bijoux to decorate also a home.
I'm sending you a lot of warm hugs from Warsaw!!!!
    All the best to you!
    Alicja
P.S. My English is not well - but I hope there's no too many errors in my thoughts:)

  24. Rachel, so pleased that you are back in business. This is how homes should look and I'm glad your back showing us how. I had the honour of seeing one of your stores and I replay it often in my memory. Your book is perfection, and I re-read it on my squishy white couch and dream. Congratulations to you on what has turned out to be a good year.

  26. I am a loyal customer that has always sought out your stores in each of the cities they were in. Sometimes I made special trips to the city JUST to see your store. I was very young and very broke, but saved to come because I believed your vision, your items, to be perfection. To be worth it.

I am cheering for you - I hope you can hear me over the mountains (I am in Denver). I cannot imagine the heartache, the work, the tenacity it has taken to be where you were and where you will be, but I want you to know - it's worth it.

    All the best.

My daughter Nicole met you in Selfridges the day of your book signing a blonde Aussie school teacher ..!(Hope you recall her)
She rang me at 2.30am to tell me she had spoken to you
    Thankyou for being so sweet
she knows how much Shabby Chic has meant to me over the years I just wish I would have been there to say thankyou for all you have given to so many people

  29. Rachel I am so excited the stores are back. I literally thought "how will I ever find another store like this". I am wondering......you mentioned workin with local artisans.... So excited youare back! Wondering if through all this have you worked out any new business relationships that cause any of the furniture to be crafted with the same quality but more affordability. Your stuff is unparalleled but as you know 1 in 10 americans are currently unemployed due to the financial crisis and I am sure that 99 out of 100 still employed have felt the pressure on their pocketbooks? Just curious if this has been incorporated into the return of shabby chic. Hoping so as your furniture used to be a staple for us but my husband has been unemployed since June and all has been a struggle since then.

  30. I enjoyed your post this morning and especially the photos. I also like hearing about now that your children are grown you don't have to worry about "sticky fingers". Let me give you a heads up, the children grow up then they give you another generation of "sticky fingers" but somehow you never worry about "those" sticky fingers! Take care Rachel.

  32. Love the new book - such eye candy and inspiration to savor! Glad to see you up and running again in the retail market and wishing you loads of success. Of course there is great cost associated with purchasing high quality goods and we are now in an economy that doesn't allow many of us to partake . . . but . . . everything you do and every idea you share can be accomplished with a good scavenger hunt through flea markets, garage sales, etc., which is what I've always loved about your style. And, we still have your Simply Shabby Chic line at Target when we want that "only Rachel could have designed this" look! A little something for us all - Thanks!

  33. I just bought your new book, love it and glad to see you're incorporating religious art. I've been a collector of beautiful religious and spiritual art/ artifacts for years, its a passion of mine. It lends itself to almost any decor... mine tends to be a blend of Bohemian Gypsy, Salvage and Shabby Chic styles. Congrats on your new store and the new product lines are divine!

  36. So gorgeous, all of it!

How inspiring, too, that you've been able to take a personal/professional setback and use it to refuel an artistic rebirth, fine-tuned through editing. Less really is so much more, isn't it? As the late Diana Vreeland said, "Elegance is refusal."

Is this pattern discontinued forever?

  43. Hi Rachel, I wanted to thank you for the wonderful evening yesterday and for signing my (your) book with these so nice words. You saw a lot of people and probably you don't remember me, but just in case, I am the French woman with her tall son dressed in black. Sorry for my terrible French accent, by the way.
I just wanted to let you know I uploaded some pictures about your signing event on my Flickr here :
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/yaelbolenderforcuculap/sets/72157622553132906/
If you copy and paste this link, you will be able to see them. And if you need to use some of them for your blog or whatever else, you are welcome. They are not so good, but very "expressive".
Anyway, as I told you yesterday, I really hope this time your new stores will last more than 20 years.
Even if I am opening a store soon on Eagle Rock Boulevard and if my style is quite different from yours, it doesn't mean I can appreciate your taste a lot, for me you are an example of success and in the same time of simplicity, what is really remarkable. You also taught me moderation and it has been very helpful in my life and work.
I am in Paris in November but hope being allowed to open my store in December. It will be a true honor and pleasure for me to see you there and I hope that one day my craft will be at your service. I am sure my love for handmade things can meet the world of Shabby Chic. It would be a great joy for me.
Thanks again for all, it was a lot of fun and a pleasure for the eyes, and the mouth !

  48. Dear Rachel,
Saw your article in NYT and had to share a little story with you. I was working in NY back in the 90's, in Steve Martin's play and was forever in and out of Zabar's, I had wandered into the cookware section one day and struck up a conversation with a charming older lady, and we began talking, I told her I was from Chicago but loved NY. Somehow we segued into a family discussion and she asked if I had heard of SHABBY CHIC..of course I had, in several magazines. She then went on to tell me how that was her daughter and that she had just written her first book and was expanding into stores and maybe one would pop up in Chicago. She was so proud of you and perhaps the best P/R engine a girl could get ! Later as SC became a household name all over the US, I often thought of that encounter and of a mother who believed so much in her daughter and was so very proud of her talent. I was sorry to hear of her illness, but rest assured she is watching from above and blessing all you do.
Best wishes in your new endeavors !
