Flowers

springtime 2 finally

March is upon us with spring around the corner, which of course means
flowers.

Like so many I have learnt to live and breathe in the space
of uncertainty. So many unanswered questions.

But spring flowers will still bloom and that is such a reassurance.
No matter what, they will visit us soon to give us
beauty and inspiration.

Variety copy new final

As I continue to shoot my new book, it is a rare photo that doesn't
involve flowers, either in their natural form, as a fabric that I
have designed or on a mirror.

What would the world look like if there never had been a flower?

Imagine new 1

As always I look for guidance and metaphors in life...

Some flowers are annuals, some perennials.

Wildflowers have always been a favourite of mine.
I love the idea of a beautiful flower blooming for a season
and then finding a new home for its next bloom.

wildlfower jar jpg

Wherever it blooms its always just as beautiful, only in a different home.

blue bonnets 1

Even though some flowers just have one season to make their mark,
they still leave behind memories, the same way some stores that we
prematurely had to close, will.

closed stores final

Chicago, Illinois
Natick, Massachusetts
Austin, Texas
Atlanta, Georgia
Corte Madera, California

As always, all employees worked with dignity till the end.
From the time they knew their time of employment was limited,
until the end, they closed the doors of Shabby Chic as gently
as possible.

Many customers were confused and concerned.
"Is ShabbyChic going away completely?"
"Why, what happened?"

Questions I cannot fully answer. But I know in my heart I am
doing everything possible to save as much as possible,
and the support of so many continues to fuel the engine.

All of your comments posted are heartwarming and enabling
me to clear my mind to reestablish my creativity.

My biggest fear is of letting the "business take that away."

But I wont let any of you down, in how I will pour my heart
into my new book.

Cracks make for character, and authentic character makes for soul.
I think you will all be pleased in the results.

Still some stores and e-commerce remain open, selling
floral inspired everythings, including our new sleepwear collection.

  2. Hi Rachel!

My heart does go out to you, your family and your employees...because my hubby and I run 2 businesses (one 78 years old and my business that is 18 years old). And we had to start lay-offs...but, just know that as one window closes; another will be opened. :) Know you hear that all the time, but....never hurts to hear it again.

Stay strong and continue to follow your heart and all will turn out as it is suppose to!

I look forward to what I think is going to be one of your very best books.
As I am in Chicago, I am very very sad that Shabby Chic is no longer there. Elizabeth is a wonderful person and I will miss her so much! So sad.

I look forward to your new bouquet.

I shopped the Natick Ma. store 'til the last day! Bought the entire set of white linen sheets for my bed and then went on to buy the royalpedic mattress that was used in your store! My husband and I are sleeping in heaven! Thanks for making our home cozier! Keep calm and carry on!

Walking in to your stores is like walking into heaven. I'm looking forward to the new book!

  34. When I turned 40 ( I turned 43 this past dec.)my mom was diagnosed with two kinds of cancer and congestive heart failure. My husband and I had just moved into our new home that we designed and built. The doctor gave her 5 years. We are entering our 3rd year and she is not doing well. On my 43rd birthday the doctor told me I have a tumor on my ovarie. After waiting two horrid weeks to see if it was cancer, it is not. I have to go in soon to have a complete hysterectomy. We have no kids.I always thought I would be a Mom later in life. Now, we have our home up for sale. The home we built. My mom is living with us and even with insurance between her bills and now mine..well, we have to sell. All I can say is let yourself feel the hurt. it's ok to be sad. I had to learn its ok to cry. Like you, some people have let me down. People I thought would be there no matter what. But I also learned I am strong. Probably stronger then I ever thought I was. The sun is always going to shine, the flowers are always going to bloom and there will always be a tomorrow. Concentrate on all your accomplishments..because no matter what, you have made tons of accomplishments and be proud and no matter what, hold your head up high!

  35. Hi Rachel...glad to hear you are writing another book....we are all hurting...and we will all pull together and get through this tough, difficult time. Hopefully, we'll be better for it, too.

I wanted to show you a handbag I made for myself out of one of your Shabby Chic curtains. I was inspired by that original sewing bag you picked up at a flea market and used instead as a purse. It was so pretty. This one doesn't look like yours with the hoops, but I tried to use similiar fabric.

  36. I think it's high time for a rose to be named after you! It must have a sweet fragrance and be pink, of course. If it already exists then I must have it for my garden and if it doesn't then we need to see about having one named in your honor.

    ReplyDelete
  37. What am I saying, you need a WHITE rose named after you! Hmmm, maybe there should be TWO roses, a pink AND a white. They can name the white rose Shabby Chic and the pink rose Rachel Ashwell. How would you like that? I'm an avid gardener and roses are my favorite so I'm going to look into this. :D

Anyone else like my suggestion? Rachel needs a rose named after her.

Maybe shabby chic and yourself are like the flowers you love so much.. especially roses... you have to cut them back (sometimes you have no choice).. and sometimes they die a little or get a few bugs.. but when you nuture, fertilise, spray and water them (in your case with creativity) and with some TLC... they will bloom with far more radiance the next season
I truly believe you will see through this

It is terribly sad that you have closed the doors to your Shabby Chic store in Austin. We moved here just after I had my daughter, and many days I was just feeling blue and weary, so I would take her in your store and we would stroll through all the beautiful things. I felt like my heart was alive and taking shape around me. Each time I left refreshed, inspired. Oh thank you for sharing your gifts with us, and I am so sad to see the store go. 66. Hi Rachel,
I walked by your Santa Monica store today and discovered with great shock and sadness that you are closing the doors to your store. Upon coming home I searched your blog to discover more information, I was stunned to learn of you chapter 11 filing. Being an interior designer in Los Angeles, and having had a store myself a few years back, I want to express to you how sorry I am that this is happening to you and your company. Your design style has become such a phenomenon, and a household word that describes not just you but a design aesthetic that you shaped and created over the last 20 years. To see something so established and iconic be impacted by the economic circumstances of today, is heart breaking on all levels. I wish you all the best and hope that something even greater than your previous success comes out of this crisis.

  67. Rachel,

It is indeed very sad to see what is happening in your part of the world. I can remember visiting your site way back in '98 for the first time when you were all crammed in that tiny warehouse/office on the bend of Arizona Circle. One of the great pleasures I get from my job is watching my customer's businesses grow and change over time. Oftentimes, we are there longer than a lot of the company's own employees. But I will never forget the FIRST time you moved into the current AZ office. The first buildout when Cami and Sharon were still there and so many others whose faces I will not forget but names escape me currently.

Being involved in a company's IT infrastructure lets you see into some of the most important of changes. I was there when we opened the DC, I was there when you opened almost all of the retail stores, I was there to see many people come and go.

So before this turns into a post about me its time to get to why I bothered to say all of that. Its all about history - personal and professional. And so to think back on all of the history that DCG and myself personally have with you and Rachel Ashwell/Shabbychic it is hard to see what has happened. The public sees the happenings from one angle. But being intimately familiar with your business and people there takes it to a whole other level.

As you said, cracks make character. These trying times are when we see who we really are and who the people around us really are. And you'll pardon me for being cliche but for every door that you close a new one will open. These times in our life come because it is time for a change. Time for weeding out some of the fluff and getting back to why we started this in the first place. Take the business model you started out with in the first place an apply it to your situation: take some slightly worn, damaged goods and turn them into a new, refined and redesigned piece.

    So, to be cliche:
Take the lemons and make lemonade.
Close the door behind you and open the one down the hall in front of you.
    Be Shabby Chic!

    Take care, Rachel.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Think about it..you are "Shabby Chic" It will not go away unless you decide to. A company as brick and mortor may cease to exist but the passion of your creative nature will not. It can still live on but more like small patch of flowers versus the open fields you once covered. One day it may grow wildly but if it doesn't a small bunch will still make us happy.

You have forever influenced many more people than you know! I will be forever grateful for all the Shabby Chic products I have bought from your stores over the years, and especially for all of the beauty and inspiration you provide. You taught us all the beauty of imperfection. In an imperfect world that is a great lesson. I am sad that your stores must close , I will forever be a fan and will be there for anything you have to offer! As a mother I know that no matter how life goes, looking at our precious children always puts everything into perspective. Maybe one day you will open another store, in a new home, like a wildflower. I will be waiting, best wishes for the future,

    A Shabby Chic fan

  70. Dear Miss Rachel:

I will miss you like the sun misses the flower in the dead of winter... you are my hero, and I love you. I cried when I read your blog today... Shabby Chic meant so much to me. My entire house was purchased at your stores... down to the very last detail, and I purchased your vintage white lace prom dress from the Atlanta store last year... I am wearing it on my Wedding Day! You inspired me, and you have left an unforgettable imprint upon my life and my soul... please find a way to keep Shabby Chic alive... for it will always be alive in my heart! I love you, Miss Rachel. I even have my own heart drawer and kisses beside my bed... you were my saving grace.

  71. I can't tell you how often I open up your books for inspiration- for my art- and for my home. My prayer for you is this: That in the midst of this struggle you will have a renewed joy-remembering what has gotten you this far. Sometimes when we're in the thick of it- we forget to sit back and look at all of the beauty and magic around us. It seems that in the hardest of times, though- our creativity blossoms. Blessings to you, your family, and your team.

  72. I almost drove into a parked car when I saw the signs in the store window announcing the closing. What a sad day. Your store is such a part of Santa Monica and has always served as inspiration to me. I forever look at antiques a little differently and wonder what an old piece of furniture would look like with a coat of paint and sand paper.
I just got back from your Santa Monica store and just sat on one of the remaining couches just flipping through your books on the table and watching as everyone is trying to get a piece of what is left. I bought all your books as if to hold on to the memory. I know this won’t be the last of you and I look forward to your next endeavor, but for now, it’s really sad to see the store close. Montana Avenue won’t be the same without Shabby Chic.

  75. Hi Rachel,
I went to your Soho store yesterday, and was so sad to see that you are closing your business. It must be gratifying to know that there are homes across the world that have been influenced by your taste, and vision. I know that my sense of decorating has been so influenced by you.
This economy is effecting so much of what is dear to us. Losing Shabby Chic is just another example of that. I know that this economy will turn around, and we will all be okay.

  78. Dear Rachel,
I am a decorating junkie but no one has influenced me more than you. When I decorate my house be it for the different seasons or just giving the place a fresher look, I always say to myself "What would Rachel do?"
I too have fallen on hard times, my husband has lost his job and we are constantly worried ourselves but when the sun shines through my pretty house it gives me happiness and peace and you, Rachel were the one who taught me how to make it look that way. Your God given talent will see you through.

  79. Hi Rachel,
I still can't believe that Shabby Chic is saying good bye. I read your latest blog and it brought me to tears, reading what your daughter said to you. Thank you for sharing that with us. Unfortunately we don't know the path God chooses to take us on. I have experienced a lot of tragedy in my life and it can bring you down, or you can grow as a person from it. I hope I am at the point of growing.
You are a real inspiration and just know that you have inspired so many of us to decorate with your unique style. I have really enjoyed all of your books, and have bought 3 of your couches (which I love). I will miss Shabby Chic.
    God Bless

  84. I just want to thank you for what you have given with your style. For me, there is now something that describes me and I can express it through Shabby Chic. I am so sorry at the passing of your Mum.

This past year, I got married, lost my father, graduated, had a baby, put him in the hospital 2 times, lost our friend and best man, and finally celebrated with my husband and I getting laid off right before the holidays. I chose to see it as God was giving me a break.

You are so talented. The world is your oyster...What is next?

  85. Hey,

I first want to start off by saying that your style defines me. It gives me a wonderful place to be.

I am sorry about your mum. I know I cannot fully understand. But let me tell you, this past year I have gotten married, lost my Dad, graduated from college after 18 years, had a baby 6 days later, lost our friend and best man, put my son in the hospital 2 times, and finally at the end of the year my husband and I lost our jobs. God gave me a break.

You are SO talented the world is your oyster. What I have to say to you is...WHAT IS NEXT?

Oh my...I have such a mix of emotions over these events that have led you to closing your stores. I will extend a hug *in spirit* and words of encouragement for you to keep moving forward no matter what!

There are so many unnecessary reasons why you and so many others have found themselves in the mess of reorganizing. But that's another story of facts and opinions that I'll save for someplace else..

It all just saddens me greatly that you have been swept into this involuntary vacuum.

  87. Hi Rachel,
I went to your Santa Monica store to be sure it was still there. It was, but so sad and so empty. It has been a shock for me and I prefer to remember how it was before. Wish you could keep this so wonderful inspiring and peaceful space. It allowed me to notice how amazing are your sliding doors leading to the back and also how gorgeous is your ceiling. This space will be yours forever. Shabby was for me the perfect sanctuary to find peace and beauty. Where will I go now for my zen moment ?
Please, do everything you can to come back, even if it is in a while. We, all the customers, will be there for you. I can't always afford your items, but never mind, it is so pleasant to see such a deliciousness and comfort, it is so inspiring, so enjoyable.
I am with you, whatever happens next,

  91. Dearest Mrs. Ashwell,
I had wondered for months why I haven't seen anything new in the book stores or TV about you. So it is a shock and sadness to go to your website today and find bad news. I can't believe it. I was going to ask if you were going to have a new book soon cause I have been going over your books a hundred times and I wanted to see new pictures of yet again beautiful Shabby Chic decor and ideas. How can Shabby Chic end. Just the style itself is your creation and that cannot end, it lives in our homes and in our lives. You should have your own show on HGTV. I know you had a shot lived series but you need a weekly show. We can't live without your creations and ideas. By the way, how can I obtain a copy of those shows! I send an e-mail about it to Style network and your wedsite but no response. Anyway, don't give up and go away completely, at least! Is it the economy doing this. Seems everyone is effected. I am sorry to hear about your mum. My condolenses. You seem like a stong women and will come back stronger. I look forward to your book! I'm glad I will have another book of reference to go back to hundred times, too. All my love and support. Susan Patterson, Port Charlotte, FL

I pray that what ever caused you to close your stores you will regain the strength and wisdom to come back even stronger. Eventhough I have never bought any of your beautiful design items I have purchased many of your books. I have found you to be most inspirational to me personally. I remember when I was first introduced to you, your show was airing on the style network. From my first introduction to you I was hooked I began taping all of your shows, you have inspird me and touched my heart immensely Rachel. I began going to your stores I even met you once in your Malibu store your daughter and her friend were tagging around with you. Rachel do learn all the lessons you need to learn for your come back I'm not ready to let you go and I'm sure your not ready to let us all go and the lovely designs you create. 96. I am truly sad to see your stores closing. I am about your age, and I grew up in England. I find great comfort and joy in your bed linens. I even find a deep satisfaction in ironing the pillow cases. I truly appreciate the attention to detail and the quality of your product. And the quality is something that is not immediately apparent -- it is something that you recognize as you hold the wet duvet cover, as you iron... it all feels grounding and homey. And the colors and the freshness bring happiness to my heart.

I am sure you will come back with a new company.. I just hope you dont succumb to sacrificing the quality of your merchandise and that intangible feeling of goodness.

  97. Keep Shabby alive online! Shabby must not go away! Shabby isn't just a store...it's an experience...it's a mantra...it's an essence. When I heard the news I actually had to sit down. How, can a store affect someone in an emotional way? That's when I realized that walking into Shabby Chic is like walking into a sea of calm. And recreating in my home is something that puts me at ease. Oh, how I wish it could stay alive online until the economy picks up. Consider this?

  100. Dear Rachel,

I just read your most recent comments so I'm writing this with tears in my eyes. I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your Mom. I lost my Dad at 19 and I think as my own Mother gets older, I fear the day that I will be without her.

Sometimes we think that certain people are immune to bad luck or pain and it's just not so. I had to leave a job of 15 years because of period of severe depression. I was in sales and account management and even though I felt it was time for a change, I didn't realize that my employers would also end up having to sell their business of over 20 years.

I have always loved your style and I've wanted one of your smaller sofas for years. I have a small garden apartment in the marina area of San Francisco and now I fear that I'll never own that "perfect" sofa. I'd started to collect the perfect Madeline Weinrib rugs in "pink" shades...of course. I was only "introduced" to her sometime in 2008. Each time I opened a shelter magazine, I could spot one of her rugs immediately. Since times are very tight for this single lady right now, I wasn't sure when I'd be able to bring them into my home. But, suddenly, I was in the right place at the right time not just once but twice. I was also lucky enough to find a couple of her pillows that would go perfectly with the rugs and would look gorgeous on "my Rachel" sofa.

I love all kinds of movies; the classics, foreign cinema, light romantic comedy, quirky independent films and wide reaching sagas and I've always imagined myself sitting on a cozy shabby chic sofa with my sweet fur baby, a Prince C. and a bowl of popcorn. At this point, I have a 10 year old foam sofa that's hard as a rock and my Prince must have gotten lost on his way here but, I do have a very lovable Siamese.

I've been trying to figure it all out over the last several years as well. You've already done so much more than your share. You've brightened homes and helped to teach people how important it is to love the space you have no matter the size and you've done it all with your Shabby pizazz!

20 years in a business with multiple stores?! How many of us can even make a business work for one or two years?

If all things happen for a reason and sometimes I struggle with this idea, I am sure that you'll be back with another store. I sure hope so! In the meantime, if I can kick this flu bug, I'm going to try to go down to your San Francisco store and hope that there is a small sofa on sale with my name on it! I've been trying to reach someone days by phone and I even left messages but now they're not returning calls or answering the phone. I do understand to a certain degree but it's really tough when you can't get a person on the line to speak with. If you happen to see a love seat or small sofa that I could spend the night on (if I had visitors), that would be just great! You can email me at nancflys@aol.com.

I'm looking forward to reading your new book and seeing what roads you'll take from here. Hold your loved ones close to you. That's the most important thing. I hope that all of your hard working employees find jobs that will bring them joy and money that will bring them through these tough times. Take care Rachel! Cheers, Nancy

  102. Dear Rachel:
I've been a fan and an admirer of yours for many years. Bought alot of your items, and books, used your ideas, as well.
I was very sorry to hear about your stores closing, and so many sad things happening in your life.
Please know that no matter what happens, you will always have God and your talent, and your fans, to sustain you.
We (my family) lost our only son,
3 daughters remain. To a car accident in 2005. It was God, prayer, and your books that helped me through a very rough time.
I can remember the countless times, I would pick up one of your books when I was feeling low, sad, and it would always inspire me, and help me out of a blue feeling.
I drew from your talent in finding beauty, in everyday things, looking at your ideas, your beautification, and your searching for lovliness, in every corner of life, that all helped me to see that beauty is all around us, even in the midst of tragedy, and loss.
I have always loved old things, and admired the art, quality, and talent of artisians from days gone by. Now, you too will continue to inspire us all, with your love and art, and talent, to keep us looking at the beauty of age, useage, and an objects history, its character, its essence. Keep looking up, and I pray that God will help you every day, and you will be blessed, as never before.
    Sincerely,

  105. Rachel:

I was so sorry to hear the news about Shabby Chic. Having had to close my own baby boutique several years ago due to the poor economy, I know how heartbreaking it is to have the dream essentially become one's nightmare. At the same time, both of my parents were also terminally ill and passed away. It was an ache like no other.

I wanted you to know, though, how much our family has loved the the products that you have made available to all of us over the years-whether at your shops, Mervyns or Target. Everyone who has ever visited my home has commented on how cozy and welcoming it is, and much of that is due to the lessons I have learned from your books and by visiting your shop and web site. My husband is stationed overseas now and is living in Army housing. No slipcovered sofas or flowers there. Don't laugh--he misses them and he is far from a girly guy!

While none of us have that crystal ball, I know that good things lie ahead for you. You are an enormously gifted and talented businesswoman. There are so many things that you can and will do, when the time is right. You will know when that is and we will be waiting. There are so many possibilities, whether it's a special tv show, seminars, webinars, a web based business, more shopes, a subscription web site, books..... I wish we could all put a book together for you showcasing "Lessons We Learned From Rachel" :)

All the best to you and thank you again for all the beauty and grace you have brought to all of us who love Shabby Chic.

  106. Rachel,

I'm so sorry to hear this news. Your books, your style have influenced my life and my home in ways you cannot imagine. I feel like you're an old friend. My kids used to hear you say on your TV show (which I never missed), "In the world of Shabby Chic..." One day my three-year-old was very quiet in the back seat of the car. Finally he asked, "Mummy, is it really a shabby chic world?" Cutest moment ever.

I'm thrilled to hear you're working on another book - I own every book you've written. Things will get better, Rachel. The economy will change, people will have a new respect for old things after the financial shakedown that's happened.

I almost feel I have you to thank for my career. Because of you, I became obsessed with white and wound up refinishing furniture and eventually learning how to do old-world finishes in homes. Did that a few years and could never find the perfect white paint, so invented my own formula.

I later started writing novels and that white paint became the subplot quest of the main character in my first published novel, Town House, which is being made into a film by Fox. The agoraphobic son-of-a-rock-legend is a color consultant obsessed with white paint. And his ex-wife develops a hot decor style, etc. Not the main focus of the story but you might get a kick out of it. If you click on my website and drop me a line, I'd be honored to send you a copy as a thank you for all you have done for me and my lifestyle.

All the best going forward, Rachel.

I have been following your work for years ~ since I was in my young 20s (mid 1990's) and had moved to chicago from pennsylvania...i worked at the urban outfitters next to one of the first shops you opened off michigan ave in chicago...walked in the shop one day, bought your first book, and that was it...i was hooked. Since then i have gotten married & moved back to rural pennsylvania living. I go to auctions all the time and find beautiful shabby treasures to bring into our home. I am deeply saddened by your loss of the shops etc. Please know that you have impacted the lives of many through your style. Our homes have because a beautiful reflection because you have tought us to look at tattered objects in a new light. Please take time to rest and breath in the tough moments that you are in. Brighter sky's are comming. Looking forward to your book....so thankful for you~ BLESSINGS to YOU....
