This is a blog I never in my wildest nightmares thought I would have to write.
Last Thursday evening Shabby Chic filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
Business has been hard for a while, but the notion that my beloved company would become as broken as it has was never a consideration for me.
I thought there would be other solutions. But with great sadness, in the end, it was the best choice of some very not nice choices.

What this means to me is an opportunity to try to restructure and save Shabby Chic.
Over the past couple of years we opened about 10 new stores. Largely due to an economy that took a dramatic turn, the timing was very poor to try and expand. There are other reasons that caused the cracks, which one day I will explain just to pass on my lessons.

The road to recovery for Shabby Chic will be hard and recovery is by no means certain. I find myself in a situation of having to understand parts of business that are challenging for a flea market girl.
I was never much of a negotiator and for 17 and one half years I grew my company in a manageable way.

I find the rise and the fall of Shabby Chic very parallel to my family.
My son Jake was born 20 years ago in May and Shabby Chic's doors opened in august twenty years ago.

Their growth and lessons have often been very parallel.
And then twenty years later, as many of you know, I lost my mum. Even though she was still so lovely and her heart-beat was strong, her broken pieces couldn't be fixed.

Shabby Chic's heart and soul beats as strong as ever.

And if I say so myself, Shabby Chic has never been so beautiful.

I have a strong team who believes in our future. We know the problems and every minute of every day is being spent making Shabby Chic strong again.

I am touched by the demand for our products. Some of which we cannot supply at this time. I thank you for loving Shabby Chic. And somehow we will shrink down to a place that we can get our feet back on the ground.

If you see a store closing it is not because we didn't try, or love the neighbourhood. We just have to focus our energies and resources to gain our strength back and take care of our customers through remaining store locations.
Your patience will be needed and so very appreciated. My staff will answer your questions as best they can.
I thank you for your faith in me.
With love, respect, gratitude.
Patience. Hope. Love.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, Rachel. But of course there will be new beginnings as well.
ReplyDeleteThis economic hardship has hit all our families. I'm trying to learn to appreciate just being alive, with people I love.
I'm so sorry about your company, Rachel. I am a newcomer (today was the first time I visited your website). But I adore shabby chic decor and your style, so I wish you the best in making a comeback with your company.
ReplyDeleteCheryl L.
Oh Rachel, I am so sorry to hear that. I learned alot about the aesthetics of simple design from you. You've opened my eyes to the beauty of worn things and also how to love them.
ReplyDeleteThere is much love surrounding you. You will bounce back. And perhaps this restructuring will be just the thing to catapult Shabby Chic a whole new direction that you could have never imagned in your sweetest dreams.
Prayers & hugs~
Kelly
I am so sorry Rachel. Wishing you and your company the best of luck. My prayers are with you.
ReplyDeleteAs a long admirer of your style and products, I am deeply saddened to hear this news. Along with hopes for a better economy, I send my personal wishes as you work through this challenging time. Best of luck.
ReplyDeleteohhh Rachel, I am deeply saddened! Please do not lose faith sweet lady... This is a time for renewal, a rebirth to reflect on what is really important to you and your family at this very moment in time...
ReplyDeleteThe imperfections and the collapse of all things old and loved, were the very thing you bulit your company on, and you will yet again, find new life, new purpose and a new beginning for Shabby Chic...
The best is yet to come angel friend...
Always, love to you,

I am so sad to hear this news :(
ReplyDeleteI have loved your Shabby Chic style since first seeing your TV show here in Canada. When I first seen your Shabby Chic style, it was the first time I was able to put a name to my style of decor too. Thank you for that :) I will always love, and be, Shabby Chic.
Keep on keepin on though Rachel...you have so many fans!

I'm so sorry to hear this news.
ReplyDeleteYou've given so much of yourself and I know you will find your way through this, to a wonderful, beautiful place of peace.
Rachel you can do it. I have great faith in you... I think it's best to trim the fat (for lack of better words), design from the heart, go with your gut, get back those flea market days -- your roots. You CAN do it.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear your sad news, we are all going through tough times , it seems so amazing to me that so many companies are facing these difficulties , how can things be so bad.
ReplyDeleteThings can only get better I suppose,
Cheers to a brighter future.
Chris
I'm so sorry to hear this. I hope you are able to regroup and recover, or reinvent yourself in new ways you might not have otherwise. I'm a brand-new small business owner and it is overwhelming in this economy. I often wonder if I was crazy to make a go of it right now, but I believe in my heart that doing what you love will reap great rewards in the long run. Best wishes to you...and if, when you recover, you wind up opening a shop in the Windy City...I'm your gal for catering the big bow-cutting ceremony! ;)
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to hear this very sad news. You are creative, so dearly talented, and will persevere.~~~XXOO, Beth
ReplyDeleteYou CAN turn things around....one step at a time, slowly slowly, have faith...and know your Mum is there guiding you. Wishing you all the best in finding a positive way to move forward and take flight once again. x
ReplyDeleteRachel,
ReplyDeleteI have followed your company since the beginning and meet you long ago (1991-1993, I took care of Jessica Reed)
I have always admired you and what you do in business, I have faith that you will regroup and come back strong, with your fabulous company. You have and continue to inspire us all.
Wishing you success in this part of your adventure!
callie (cynthia)
I am so sorry to hear your news. Your style has been so influential, and I'm sure that you will persevere. It was a beautiful post, and brought tears to my eyes. Good luck to you.
ReplyDeleteJust as you transformed the old into something new and useful, I trust that you will find a way to take this awful event and turn it into a new and wonderful opportunity for yourself and those connected to you. I wish you all the best and look forward to seeing you rise again.
ReplyDeleteRemember your blog on Reflection?
ReplyDeleteRemember this? "During a moment when I needed reassurance of the future, a dear friend quoted
"What lies behind you and what lies ahead of you are tiny matters compared to what lies within you." by Waldo Emerson."
Well, Sweet Rachel, remember that!
Best wishes and warm hugs! Helen
You've had such a huge impact, the ripples are still finding more and more corners that they've yet to reach. I wish you the best as you regroup. I hate to see this happen...
ReplyDeleteMay you find your feet soon, Rachel.
ReplyDeleteNiki
I've never posted on your blog before, but thought it an appropriate time to make my first comment. I have faith in your endurance! Your eagerness to remain on the right track will pull your company through ~ I used to work in the collections department of a bank during the hard financial times of the 1980's... and there were indeed companies who pulled through, with perserverance and intelligence, both qualities of which I'm positive you have!
ReplyDeleteRachel,
ReplyDeleteI am so, so sorry about your news. I LOVE your style and your products--I know things will work out.
Dear Rachel. I am a long time fan of yours and am sorry to hear about your current situation. Please know that you are being held in my thoughts and prayers for strength and creative response in this difficult time. I know you will rise above all of this and return stonger than ever. I had to close my small environment themed, non profit boutique a few months ago for the same reason...the economy. You are not alone.
ReplyDeleteBest regards,
gloria
One door closes another door opens.. Have faith, stay strong. You are and always will be an inspiration.
ReplyDeleteGood thoughts from me to you...It's said that you close a door and a window opens. Windows let the light in,as your company has lit many homes with its warmth and coziness....
ReplyDeleteKeep a smile...
We will be there
Dear Rachel Ashwell,
ReplyDeleteI have been following you and your company ever since we moved to the USA almost 7 years ago. I wish you all the strength, cleverness and a big portion of luck to make it through these hard times.
Like the well-known 2nd world war poster says it:
"Keep calm and carry on!".

Rachel I am so sorry to hear the sad new about Shabby Chic - I live in the UK and have been a lover of Shabby Chic since purchasuing your first book over 10 years ago on a visit to New England. Since then I fell in love with the style of Shabby Chic and have decorated our home in this style and have collected all your books which even inspired me to visit LA to go to the Santa Monica store - the first Shabby Chic store! My last visit to your store in Malibu was 2 years ago and I did feel at the time that the product lines in the store had moved away from the core values a little too much which made me sad. As opposed to being a store filled with unique one offs there were too many lines which were the same as those sold in other stores which stock mass produced items rather than the unique, vintage one offs. I felt the design of some of the fabrics was straying further from the quintessential shabby chic country style and I left the shop without making a purchase - which was unheard of. I sincerely hope that Shabby Chic is reborn and rises from ashes to reclaim its former glory. Helen
ReplyDeleteSo very sorry. I had to close my very small and very beloved vintage shop last year and my heart still breaks to think about it. We regroup and we move on, I am now internet selling but will have another shop one day, having learned by my past mistakes. Who could predict this recession. I wish you well in your regrouping. Take Care - Be Strong - Rachael in New Zealand
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to see Shabby Chic go through a hard time. Rachel Ashwell is such a special person and her last blog shows it. I will look forward to a new and better Shabby Chic. I know it will happen.
ReplyDeleteShabby Chic is not just a style it is a way of life!
Oh Rachel i am so so sorry. My thoughts are with you as i too have been through the same situation, i know the feelings stabbing your heart right now, but as i found out, life goes on,and if there are lessons to be learnt, learn them well, and bounce back twice as strong, you have an abundance of support from around the world. Amanda, Australia.
ReplyDeletethat was so beautifully written. i appreciated your words so much as i am trying to keep my little shop afloat in these rather trying times. look forward to reading about your mending process. .. best to you and your beautiful products.
ReplyDeletemy sister is one of your employees and we have all become pretty attached to shabby in a fairly short time. i know that she loves this company so much and really believes in it. all of our prayers and good thoughts are with you and your company.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a sad post Rachel. I have been a big fan of yours for so long and I do believe that you will rise from this, your products and style are too beautiful not to make a comeback.
ReplyDeleteMuch love to you from a shabby chic fan in the UK xxx
I've not commented on your blog before but I just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear the news. I first heard of you a number of years back when you helped create a bedding collection for Marks & Spencers here in the UK (I hope I've got that right!) and I've never forgotten how lovely it was. That was the first time that the idea of shabby chic style touched my life and now it's a bit part. I hope your company can come through this and become stronger for it.
ReplyDeleteMel xxx
your stuff always set a smile on me, even wen a have a hard day.
ReplyDeletemaking mistakes it's the only way to learn.
be strong!
My prayers are with you!
ReplyDeleteNancy
I am so sorry that things have taken this turn, but I cannot wait how you turn this shabby situation into a lovely chic creation - like you always do! I am your #1 fan and will always be no matter what!
ReplyDeleteRachel, Some people I would worry about but not you or your business. Having been in business over 20yrs myself, I am intrigued by your spunk and business mind. I know exactly what your potential is and that this is an excellent move on your part. I'm sure we at Country Garden Antiques will be seeing you for another 20 years at the "Prom Night" dance in Warrenton. Thanks for your business and go do what you have to do. It's not always fun. SHABBY CHIC LIVES ON!!
ReplyDeleteLove you,
Alan Gina and Ben
rachel, i am so sorry for you hardship. i love your company and hope that you and shabby chic come out even stronger and more beautiful in the years to come.
ReplyDeletesorry for your sad news, but wishing you all the very best. LindaSonia
ReplyDeleteAs they say,"with every grey cloud comes a silver lining". There is, and always will be a massive following for your brand. It is something nostalgic, and beautiful in an uncertain world.
ReplyDeleteRecessions have been, and gone, and don't last forever. I'm sure your company will survive, possibly in a different way, and smaller, but still there for us all.
Love, and strength to you, and your family!
Sharon xx
Prayers for you to find your way.
ReplyDeleteMy business started with you. Prayers and the best for all of us in retail and otherwise.
ReplyDeleteThe recession has hit us all world wide. You have a wonderful range of products that will always be in demand. Now those that were lucky enough to live in cities/countries where you have stores will have to travel a little further to buy your treasures. Here in Australia we were not lucky enough to have even one of your stores.
ReplyDeleteGood Luck and maybe when times are better you may open a store here in Victoria, Australia

ReplyDeleteYa gotta pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get back on that horse again.
ReplyDeleteYou were and are quite an inspiration to so many of us.
My little shop Lace and Lures was birthed watching your t.v. program! And even my RV is Shabby Chic. I needed a place to stay while traveling to flea markets buying for my shop. I never ever went to one until you showed me how to shop. lol Oh the things that I have learned from you.
I will be watching for you.
Hugs
Becky
Sorry to hear the news. I have always been a fan and I wish you luck to get back on your feet asap.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE SHABBY CHIC!
Suzanne
I'm so sorry to hear about any difficulty for you or your lovely company. Peace to you during this dark hour. God Speed.
ReplyDeleteRachel, the Best of luck to you with whatever choices you pursue. You have a very special Talent that just got lost with all the business garbage that goes on. Bring your self back even stronger, you know your Fans will be there when you are ready. Hugs a Fan,
ReplyDeleteDiane
I know with your strength and business sense Shabby Chic will endure :)
ReplyDeleteKeep calm, and carry on...
Your fan,

Rachel, I have been a fan for 18 years. Although I've never been able to afford many of your pieces I have never stopped dreaming of completely decorating my home in the original Shabby Chic from your stores. I have even imagined what it would be like to have Extreme makeovers visit with you in tow to design and decorate my home:) So I truly, from my heart adore you. Your style has become a fabric in my life. I am saddened at your news but I admire and respect your honesty and determination. I pray Shabby Chic will weather the storm well and that you will be surprised at the lovely outcome. Bless you and your Shabby Chic.
ReplyDeleteRachel, keep your face in the sun..things will come along and your company will strive once again..maybe not in the shape of grandiosity but in a more subtle way..but in a new way!! Embrace whatever is coming..you have been an inspiration for so many of us...don't be afraid..just make the tough calls and we will be here....no matter what!
ReplyDeletegod bless you and you family!
I'm sure you will regroup and be just as successful as you once were. We just opened a shoppe last October, and it's not always smooth sailing but we are fortunate to be located in a great tourist spot in beautiful Coronado,Ca. If you ever make it down to San Diego, be sure to visit us! Take Care Rachel, and best of luck to you.
ReplyDelete-Nancy
ps: I just wanted to let you know that after seeing a motto cup that said " A Present" in your book, it became an obsession of mine to collect them. They make me smile and I'll always remember you for introducing me to those darling little cups! Thank you :)
I'm so so sorry Rachel. Have faith and hopefully things will get better for you. It is so hard now to survive.
ReplyDeleteThe entire country is suffering horribly.
ReplyDeleteI hope Shabby Chic -- and all of us really -- can hang on and turn our economy around.
Good luck to you.
I am so sorry to hear of your heartbreak. You will come out of this stronger and there will be much happiness and success in your future. You will transform your world into something far greater than you can presently imagine. You have it in you and outside circumstances cannot ever change that.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes Rachel! One teeny tiny suggestions. Maybe a way for you to teach us how to achieve your looks for much less, no insult intended. I know your books do, but maybe now is a time to take this to online readers with a shop of lesser cost products, or one of a kind.A lower priced line? Expansion of what is seen in Target? I understand travel to find what you sell is costly, but maybe iin the U.S. shopping? I don't know only ideas, your the profesional. What I do know is so many of us love you and will await to see what you'll have for us! What I bet we would really all love is a show, even if once weekly and not on any cable channel! Hum..or a magazine??? Oh how we would cherish that! take care and hang in there, Love ya,Lori
ReplyDeleteAll my support, Rachel, in sorting out your business. It truly is too lovely to fail and I feel sure you and your team will find a way . . .
ReplyDeleteI have long loved your look and pull out your books or watch the dvd's for inspiration often.
Best to you and those great kids of yours. Hang in there!
You are and always will be a wonderful inspiration to so many of us. Stay strong as you sort out your business in this awful economic time. Best Wishes to you and your family.
ReplyDeleteDear Rachel, I came to Los Angeles 14 years ago and I worked accross the street from your Santa Monica Store at Babalu. Who you are and what you did always inspired me. I went on to start my own store and line, Tumbleweed & Dandelion in Venice. I heard about your chapter 11 this morning and I was very sad for all of us. It is hard times and I think we are all trying to figure out how to manuever around the curves. You are an inspiration and I have always considered what you do an asset to all of us in the industry. I am sure Chapter 12 in your life will bring joy and a stronger creative spirit to your world. xo Lizzie
ReplyDeleteShabby Chic cannot ever completely close because it would be a loss of beauty to an otherwise ordinary room, house, and life. I have never blogged before but I just had to this once. To share my thoughts... I have often thought lately that the measure of a person's life when all is said and done and they pass away is whether the world was a better place for them having been here. That is what I think about at times anyway, what I aspire to, even if in the smallest way. I think everybody does. The same applies to all life, even a business life I believe...does it/did it make the world a better place. You, and thereby Shabby Chic, have aleady succeeded in this. The world is a better place, a more beautiful place. That should give you, as an artist, a great sense of satisfaction...and your work is not even done. It cannot be finished because you have so many who love your work, philosophy, and style that they will carry the company through the lean times to see it rebound back to better times. I've personally never before seen cloth reflect light as beautifully as a painting for instance but you have accomplished that. All of your artful creations are a pure slice of heaven right here on earth. Your color palate induces a state of tranquility. I realize this all sounds maybe a little sappy but I never understood before I discovered Shabby Chic that my emotions could be transformed by color and design in much the same way as music uplifts the spirit. It has been truly transformative. Now, how can anything that uplifts the spirit & soothes the soul all while serving an entirely purposeful function such as a piece of furniture or bed linen ever go out of style?! or out of business?! Beauty never goes out of style - the soul craves it and you have brought it and will continue to bring it. Your items transform an ordinary home into a a virtual peace oasis simply with their presence! Even if the economic times get worse and our country undergoes more financial trials, the end result will simply be that people will be seeking the beauty even more. You are so truly talented; Shabby Chic will survive! Like most things in life, this is simply a test...and this test will one day be your testimony. God will certainly continue to bless you for the blessing you have been to others with the beautiful things you have created and the appreciation of hidden beauty you have opened their eyes to. Keep the faith!
ReplyDeleteI used to assist you at one of the antique shops when you would shop in Old Towne Orange. My impression of you during that time was that you are someone who is very strong and who knows which direction is best. I know you will apply those qualities to the redirection of your company and Shabby Chic will, perhaps change, but will come out on the other side of the economic troubles we all face at this time, better than ever.
ReplyDeleteKeep Calm And Carry On.
All the best-
Sue
I love that you are being so positive about this sad turn of events. Each challenge should be met with an attitude of adventure and it sounds like you are doing so. I wish you the best of luck.
ReplyDeleteYou have been a great inspiration to me - I love beautiful things and furnishings but 8 years ago - my body gave in to a genetic condition and I had to give up work - we had to liquidate our business,we had 2 under 5's and had to move house to downsize our debts - for a while the world seemed a very dark place to be - one of the beacons of light was Shabby Chic - your Shabby Chic - I bought your books or borrowed them through the library and I realised that my home could still be beautiful.
ReplyDeleteIt also gave me an interest and hobby - going to thrift stores and jumble sales - cheap pastimes - but exciting abd exhilirating.
You so helped me learn to love life again - a different life but I would say a BETTER life - I am sure that there are many many more people with stories like mine - that have been given hope and inspiration by you.
I am a big believer in Karma and if you think of all that wonderful positivity and hope you have given to others then it must surely be coming back to you in large amounts.
I dont know if you read others blogs but last week I posted a poem called "Dont Quit" that my lovely Granny gave me just after I got married - it helped me through some really dark and painful days.
And as my Granny used to say - "it is always darkest before the dawn"
Heres hoping the dawn of Shabby Chic comes very soon

ReplyDeleteHello Rachel.. I am very sorry to hear your news as well. This is such a terrible time and please know that you are not alone. There are many of us who will be here to support you as you regroup and become stronger. Take care and may hugs, gail
ReplyDeleteYou have always been a trend setter. You were very kind to me about 15 years ago when I was designing hats. Tou told me to believe in myself and not give up. I now say to you that in this problem is a new begining better and stronger than anything you have known so far, I will see you only as a complete success. Lilli
ReplyDeleteRachel, my prayers are with you, your family and your company. Your style of decorating has inspired me. Funny how some crisp sheets and a new lighter way of decorating a home can completely change your outlook on life. That's what it has done for me in the past few years after going through tough times. Thank you for that. Again, you will be in my prayers! God bless!
ReplyDeleteIt breaks my heart to hear about this. I am a big fan for many years now. I sleep on your linens every night and will not settle for anything less.May I share with you this powerful assurance from the Lord...Isaiah 40:31

Dear Rachel-
ReplyDeleteYou are an original and the one with the ideas is always a head... This is just a bump in the road of a great success. You created this all by yourself and I am sure you can do it again and again as many times and as many ways as your heart desires!
Stop by today 28 artists for 28 days are giving away their works to help everyone look on the 'bright side' We are calling it 'the bright side project'--www.leblahg.com
Wishing you all good things!
All my very best,

When I sleep on your sheets tonight I will pray for you Rachel! Hugs!
ReplyDeleteIt is surreal to think I'm "talking to" the designer of my sheets :) You are the best :)
...May your heart keep whispering to you that all is love and reassuring you that all will be well..this is from the book 'The Secret' when times get tough for me it helps to think that it will all pass and things will move on.......
ReplyDeleteTake care
Hi Rachel,
ReplyDeleteYou know, you are a strong business woman, a survivor and I'm sure you will come out of all of this even stronger! I think being a single female business owner is not always easy, but you gain strength from all those bumps in the road! I hope to see you back at Country Roads again soon. I also hope you keep writing as we all learn from your words.
Take care, Sue
I´m so sorry to hear this. You have always been such an inspiration for so many people, including myself. I know you will be back, one way or another. All the best to you, your family and your staff.

Rachel. I am an artist who lives in Brisbane Australia. You dont know me and I am guessing we will never meet.. but I had to leave a comment and tell you how much I hope your business will rise like a phoenix from the ashes, and continue to inspire us and give us joy for many years to come.
ReplyDeleteI admire your honesty and your strength. I do wonder if you realise just how far and wide reaching your style and values have become? Within the scrapbooking industry there is a whole style and look named "shabby chic" based on the principles of your ideas..
and to have embraced the creed of reuse, recycle, renew LONG before it was almost a necessity, AND see the beauty and elegance of the tattered and the second hand as you do..you should be VERY proud, you were leading the way before we new that was the way of the future.
may your trials be surmountable and your business grow and prosper once more. and I hope you in the midst of all of this, can see the beauty and the style you have given to us all.
peace.

ReplyDeleterachel i hope you receive this message :) how sad to hear, that is the very reason why i don't spread myself thin. several times i have wanted to open a store, but that would tie me to it & who would make everything :) i've been wheeling & dealing for 25 years & have become quite successful at it, check out my blog if you have time. my philosopy was to always keep the overhead low & do as much as you can without being overwhelmed, because when it's not fun anymore it's time to switch gears.i have sold all over the US & other countries & am amazed at what i've accomplished; in my area, i'm compared to you & i have more business than i can handle, so take a breath & enjoy this brief break & i'm sure you'll bounce back with a new & exciting venue, take care gio
ReplyDeleteOh, Rachel!
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to read this, and yet, somehow, I am also so inspired by your resolve to go forward.
Although we have never met, I have learned so much from you. For that, I thank you.
I wish you the very best and do hope that you will be successful in reorganizing Shabby Chic.
Perhaps by the time you are ready to re-open, I'll be able to shop with you once more. (My little business is just hanging on by a thread, as well.)
Keep calm and carry on.
Dear Rachel - - My heart goes out to you during this difficult time.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing your visions and dreams with us over the years - - you have touched the lives of so many - - and made our house a "home".
Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Rachel,
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry you are going through this right now. But I have a feeling you will come out on top. Other doors will open for you. From reading how you started Shabby Chic, I think you have what it takes to regroup and rethink your beautiful company. Good luck to you and we will keep you in our prayers. Good Luck
~Debra
Im very Sorry you are having to go thru this. I am so Sorry that we are all going thru so much of this. You will come back just like we all will come back. Let us all hope it is soon! Jamie
ReplyDeleteHello from Canada, You have been a mentor, creative guide, inspiration and dream-business gal for millions of people around the world. You are part of design history. I know it must be very hard to be going through this. Your company is like a 'child' in many ways - baby to grown-up - we all hope the very best for you and your family. If you'll have us, we want you to come back stronger and better than ever...we'll all be here. Bravo and standing ovation to you for being so honest, strong and open to sharing. Now get started on that book - day to day re-growth of Shabby Chic. It will be a best seller! (That should help $$$) LP
ReplyDeleteThese are tough times, indeed. I've just been writing about you recently on my blog - not just about your beautiful products, but also philosophy on life (which I strongly agree with). I have no doubt that you will be able to see a successful end to what is now devestating news. My best to you... P.S. I love your Pretty Ladies photograph... Donna @ An Enchanted Cottage
ReplyDeleteWhat an incredible post, full of grace and class.
ReplyDeleteEvents have merged into one crazy economic arena for all.
Because your 'product' is grounded by the right things, you will triumph. Maybe smaller, maybe differently, but I'm sure better than ever.
Prayers for you to find your way through the craziness that no one could imagine.

Rachel, everything in live changes.. Sometimes we have to stop and re-group and start over again. You did this once, you can do it again. You have a wonderful support group, all of us, and your family and friends! You have brought a style to our lives of comfy, casual and a style that speaks family. A style that has taught us all to look twice at an object before we throw it out. A style that has taught us all to recyle, and to be crafty. That does not just go away because you close a few stores. You have a huge following and we will all be here to be with you on your next adventure. Your not loosing anything here, you are getting a second chance to tweek a few things and make them better.. take that chance, embrace it and get creative! Remember: Keep Calm and carry on!
ReplyDeleteMy best wishes to you Rachel.
ReplyDeleteI've followed you for a long time from Australia.
Have faith.
Prayers and keep calm and carry on.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry! It's so obvious that your heart and soul was put into your company! Let's hope this economy is on it's way up soon! I wish you the best!
ReplyDeleteThis is not a failure; it is a sign of the times and we will all survive it together.
ReplyDeleteYour creativity will never cease...I have admired you for a long time and being in business myself I have learned that I am ALWAYS learning. These are trying times..... but it's my creativity that still burns and no one can ever put that out. That is what will get you through this. Just take a deep breath and....believe.
ReplyDeleteBeth
Anyone who creates a poster out of "Keep Calm and Carry on" will survive, and survive very well.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to the next chapter of Shabby chic!

The door closed BUT the windows are open.
ReplyDeleteTake time for yourself...
We will all be waiting!
Thank you for your honesty. You have created something that was and still is wonderful and made a whole lot of people happy to dream and happy to be home. This is just a bump on the road of your success.
ReplyDeleteI love your style. I'm sure there is a way to return to your roots. Less expensive items, but ones that have your sense of style.
ReplyDeleteYou are an inspiration, a trend-starter, iconic, one of a kind. As a shop owner myself, I really feel your pain. Stay strong!
ReplyDeleteDear Rachel,
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry for your loss, Although I cannot understand what you are goingthrough, I can in a way.. my husband and i lost our beloved french/shabby chic style cafe to a fire in Sept 2008. I can say that while ever you have faith Shabby chic will survive, you have touched many many lives with your style and given inspiration to many.. you also taught a different way of looking at old things and loving imperfections (a HUGE thing for people to learn so bless you!) and to revamp them and show that you can and deserve to have and surround yourself with beautiful things... you actually taught me that and not to feel guilty about it so i thank you we now use our best china and have flowers and we will revamp the furiture that wasnt destroyed.
The Silver Teapot Moss Vale was destroyed but I did learnt.. out of your darkest moments and pain, pure joy can follow. There has to be complete darkness before youcan see the light and i truely believe that and for you it will be the same. We lost wedding stuff.. we had our wedding at the cafe and brought it 3 days later... it has shown us to look at things.. you may find a anoth hidden talent.... and try not to worry about things regarding business... it will all work out for you, there is alot of admireation and love for you and what you do... so please dont give up... good will come from this... if we can help in anyway please do not hesitate to ask
sending you brightest blessings and love
Vicki xxxx
These are such hard times. Thanks for being such an inspiration and for explaining what is happening. Good luck in however you remake this...I'm sure with your creativity, you'll be inspiring us again soon.
ReplyDeleteStay strong, and take time for yourself!
ReplyDeleteI am a Japanese girl living in Tokyo. I used to live in California two years ago;I loved Shabby Chic style and dreamed of having a house filled with your products. Now, finally I bought a small house in Tokyo, and found this bad news while trying to figure out how to get your products over to Japan. Please remember that there are many people like me who keep loving Shabby Chic all over the world!
ReplyDeleteLove, Tamaki
Oh Rachel, I am so sorry! I know how tuff it is right now in this business! But you started with very little when you came from England and you can do it again! You are strong, independent and very talented. I admire the way you have endured over the past 20 years and I'm quite sure you will have 20 more! I hope to see you in Texas!
ReplyDeleteTheresa
I've always been a huge fan. I wish you much strength.
ReplyDeleteTake heart Rachel. You know how to make better what is old or broken and new opportunities will arise from your hardships.
ReplyDeleteLiz
I am so sorry to hear this. As hard as this for you right now, the sun will rise tomorrow and life goes on. There was never a promise made that it would be easy, but you will persevere, survive and rebound. I just know it. Have Faith.
ReplyDeleteRachel, I am so sad to hear this news! You have been such an inspiration to me and I find your sense of style unparallel. On a trip to LA I stopped by your store in Malibu and just fell in love! I live outside of Boston and recently found your new store in Natick. Although I can't afford the prices I still wished and hoped that one day I could. I wish you and your team the best of luck and hopefully Shabby Chic will come out of this downturn better than ever. Please keep us all posted on your progress!
ReplyDeleteI wish you moments of calm as you weather the storm. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
ReplyDeleteI am heart broken to hear this news. I have been a long time fan and have a goom in my home decorated with bedding from your line at Target. I'd do my entire home with it, but Hubby objects to all the "girly" stuff.
ReplyDeleteI wish you the best in your reorganization and I will continue to support you in what ever way I can.
Rachel,
ReplyDeleteYou and your business will endure this! I have been a fan of yours for years and when I found out that my son was moving to LA to attend law school, I told him that when I visit him, one of the first places that I plan to visit is your shop! I'm also a fan of your Simply Shabby Chic line at Target - your sheets are my absolute favorite!!! Hang in there!

Dear Rachel and Team,
ReplyDeleteWas very sad to read your Blog. I never surf around but was checking the Google listing of our own Website and ran across a blog about us with a Link to you.
Hopefully you can use the Chapter 11 time to regroup and restructure.
Feel that you have such a strong Brand Name recognition that this should help and you have loads of followers. The world needs unique labels and products like yours.
My sincere wishes for your success.

Rachel you have brought so much beauty through Shabby Chic to all of us - that sort of passion and grace can never be held back. May you weather this storm and continue to do great things - and in that show us all something even more beautiful.

Dear Rachel,
ReplyDeletewords hardly seem an appropriate means of expressing my compassion for you and your beautiful Shabby Chic brand. As a fellow artist and designer coming up (and out)in a challengeing economy I am all to aware of the challenges we face.
Shabby Chic is a lifestyle that we have dressed our homes in and literally wrapped ourselves with as we fall into a sweet slumber - only to awaken refreshed and renewed. It will prevail with the rebirth of something more, something new, something fresh, something old and beloved.
I am certain I speak for the millions . . . we will be here waiting to embrace what is to come from Shabby Chic and offer up in the mean time, our prayers reminding you that as Pandora opened her box and all heck broke loose . . .hope was there too.
In creative love,

Hello, I do so love your blog and items, and have the deepest sympathy re : bankruptcy. I had to go bankrupt late last year and it was one of the hardest decisions ever, but was ultimately the best move.
ReplyDeleteyou do get through it , it's tough, but new beginings can be very inspiring. my thought are with you and your company.

Thank you for Shabby Chic. It is my home.

Rachel, you and your business are iconic, and will undoubtedly perservere. You have many faithfull supporters, and we pledge to help you back to your feet again. I wish you the very best off luck and you will be in my thoughts and prayers...

I am so sorry to hear about Shabby Chic. I have loved your style and ideas for many years. Also, you are not alone in this situation. In this economy many of us are unsure of our futures. We will all make it through.
ReplyDeleteGod Bless.
Rachel, I am English and have always followed you and loved all of your beautiful things. I feel in my heart that things will turn around and that all of your great endeavours will not have been in vain. Sometimes life seems to come at you like a snow ball rolling down a hill but one thing I have learned is that there is always another door to open and step through.
ReplyDeleteWhen my husband was diagnosed with agressive MS at a young age life seemed black indeed. Now even though his illness has progressed rapidly we love all of the days that we get to spend in each others company.
Take heart and know that this is just a momentary thing and that you will gather yourself together and be stronger than before.
Blessings, A Rose Without A Thorn
Rachel, This too shall pass, with time you will be able to look back on this terrible time and not feel the same hurt and sadness.
ReplyDeleteI have always followed your growth and design and admired the things you have accomplished.
I know that you will regroup and come back smaller but stronger. These are devastating times for so many but as long as you have ones whom you love and love you back then you can and will recover.
My husband was stricken with very aggressive MS in his forties and it was a devastating thing to come to terms with. Now 6 years later even he and I can smile and know we are truly blessed. We get to spend every day together, that is our silver lining.
A door will open for you to step through, just know that all of your wonderful talents will have a new purpose.
Blessings, Maureen www.arosewithoutathorn.com
Oh, I am so sorry to hear you are going through this trying time but, I have complete confidence that you will be, as you put it, "broken but, mended". All the very best to you.

ReplyDeleteYour style is so beautiful and enduring and I hope that with all my heart that everything you need comes your way...cathy from Australia xx
Rachel, my heart goes out to you. I share the Outpost with you at Round Top twice a year, and just had to cancel my spring reservations....I cannot justify the expense until business picks up. About 20 years ago I too filed Chapter 11 with a previous business, so I know how heavy your heart is right now. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you. The Doves Nest has carried your books since the very first publication, and you have inspired me for so many years with your creative ideas. I know you will be able to reorganize and wish you all the best...stay strong in your faith and the Lord will see you through.
ReplyDeleteDear Rachel, I am very sorry to hear these news. Even I am from Switzerland I always check your homepage and read your blogs. The four books written by you I own have a very special place in my library. You helped me to find a style for my home which I felt always attached to but didn't yet understand how to "live" it. I wish you to find your way in this situation; as they say "crises are chances" I am sure you will find your chance. Hope and courage!
ReplyDeleteThere is no greater loss than something you hold so dear.
ReplyDeleteIf you have to start again with only one store, it's a do over. Something a lot of people don't get to do.
You will have hard times along with good, it would not be life without it all.
Wishing you all the luck.
Prayers are with you during this time of change...We are all rooting for you!
ReplyDeleteSonya
I will just add my love and support for all the LOVE you shared and will continue to share, perhaps in a different way...I believe we all must learn as we go along....even when the path is full of thorns. God bless you.
ReplyDeleteDear Rachel,
ReplyDeleteI know you will be fine...everything will be fine..that said i want you to know so many things...I have been rooting for you and endorsing you to everybody i know for about the past 15 years...I live in San Diego, and have always thought i would eventually meet you or work for you or something thing...I grew up under a flea market table in essence(my own little fort)...my mom and dad sold jewlery at shows and flea markets in New Jersey when i was little...I lost my first tooth at a flea market...i didn't LOVE flea markets then like i do now, I'm a mother of two girls 6yrs and 2 yrs.. i feel like we have a lot in common and i have always seen you as a mentor...a crafty kind of woman that i would love to learn stuff from, you r the aunt i WISH i had...i have never written to anyone i didn't know, you've influenced my style, i love all things lovingly worn, bright and beautiful and i don't know if you will actually read this ...but, i feel as a distant FRIEND i wanted to tell you it will be OK, sometimes thats all i need to hear ...that everything is gonna be alright...i send my prayers as well..
Tina Rowley
p.s. it's supposed to rain in Pasadena on sunday and i'm STILL going to the rose bowl- I wouldn't miss it...giggles...best to you...
You have always been a style icon to me. I know that you will continue to create the most beautiful things and when this mess of an economy turns around you will still be standing. I truly wish for you the BEST . . . just like you have given to others. I will treasure all my shabby chic things.
ReplyDeleteYou are not alone. These are very difficult times for so many people, but resilience is so much a part of our history. Regrouping, back to basics, tried and true values -- all may sound trite and over used, but they are true. You have an excellent base to build on. May God bless your efforts.
ReplyDeleteBest of luck to you. I will look forward to what's to come from you in the future. I know it will be great.
ReplyDeleteDear Rachel, one of the most wonderful parts of being a shabby chic lover is that we all value the beauty of the imperfect, peices that show the slings and arrows of life and love. Perfection shows no character....so with this in mind I would just like to say that you will come through this, more wonderful than when you went in. And to quote a famous American lady....a woman is like a teabag..you never know her strength untill you put her in hot water. Good luck to you and your team. Remember you have inspired a generatioin and thats no mean feat!!
ReplyDeleteThis is very sad to hear... I wish you all the best and i know you can make this right again...
ReplyDelete*Take Care*
Blessings from me
Oh, when I first heard I was heartbroken for you. But after reading your post I am filled with hope for you. You are the kind of person who will make this change be a positive one and come out better, stronger than you started! I can wait to see what beautiful creation is the result!
ReplyDeleteIt is really in the midst of all this stuff going on that we grow and come back stronger. I look forward to seeing how you regroup and shine.
ReplyDeleteRachel, you have been such an inspiration to so many women in the business world. Chin up, all things work together for good in the end. Endurance is the perfect word for this season! We will be faithful customers:)

ReplyDeleteOne thing I've had to learn the hard way. When your business fails, that doesn't mean you are a failure. Let yourself cry, but then please be sure you blow your nose and get up and have another go. Don't believe that awful little voice inside that says you are a failure. It's a lie~ You're not.
ReplyDeleteWeeping lasts for a night, but joy comes in the morning. Praying for you.
Tomorrow's a brighter day.
Feel free to contact me if you could use a friend who's been there.
If anyone can survive this, YOU can! I am sure of it! Keeping you in my prayers! Remember, when a door closes, a window of opportunity somewhere else opens...
ReplyDeleteDear Rachel,
ReplyDeleteThank you for all of the joy and love that you have given to me through Shabby Chic. I have always been so proud of your accomplishments and also the Shabby Chic style, and philosophy.
Elizabeth in your Chicago store has been such a sweetheart and wonderful person.
I have been holding you in my prayers since last fall and will continue as you grow even further in these challenging times.
With Kindness and much love,
Mary
So sorry to hear this Rachel. I live in South Africa - I love SHABBBY CHIC so much!! I have lots of your things in my home and you have shown/taught me another wonderful way to decorate my home. ReplyDeleteWe will be waiting!
I add my thoughts and prayers to all the previous comments. It's hard to believe our country is in the trouble it is. I pray for your re-emergence as a leader in beautiful home wares and a way of life. Thank you.

ReplyDeleteDo not stand at my grave and forever weep.
ReplyDeleteI am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
Rachel this poem is for your mother, I hope it helps......
I Did Not Die....
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn’s rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and forever cry.
I am not there. I did not die.
Stay strong, Rachel! This is only temporary. You have been such an inspiration to me. It is because of you that "shabby chic" is part of my vocabulary.
ReplyDeleteI am fortunate enough to own a Simply Shabby Chic dresser. And I intend to purchase the entire Simply Shabby Chic line. Plus, I love your books.
So, don't let this destroy you. You'll be back!
Good luck for the future. I adore Shabby Chic and like other contributors, feel that it offers not just an aesthetic, but a philosophy - one which will become even more pertinent in the years to come. So keep the faith!
ReplyDeleteOh man. no fair. I hate this! I'm so sorry, I feel your pain.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear about your hardship. You've brought unique beauty to so many! I fear for the future of many of our businesses, and as the owner of a new business myself, am fearful - but hopeful and prayerful for a brighter tomorrow for all. Heartfelt wishes to you and yours, with hopes for a new beginning for you.
ReplyDeleteRachel, I have been a fan of Shabby Chic for many years. Keep the faith. Best of luck.

I have been shopping at Shabby Chic for years. It is my absolute favorite store of all time. I remember your very first store on Montana. I am in the process of rebuilding my small business in this current economy. I find comfort in returning to my roots and what I love about it most of all. I understand what a difficult time this is for you. I believe it will get better. You created such a beautiful and original concept and you should hold your head high. I am wishing all the very best for you.
ReplyDeleteYour style has impacted my life in uncountable ways! Even the name of the company has become a part of our vernacular. Many hopes for wisdom and a strong and long-lasting company!
ReplyDeletePretty Ladies Prayers, as you refer to Mary on your blog is who we really need to turn to. In my early 20's, we started a company that was suppose to be pocket change while going thru college. Well, it turned out to make over a million dollars the first year and we grew tremendously overnight. To be able to handle such growth becomes very difficult. And, we too, made poor choices in expanding ourselves too thin. In doing that, we had to go Chapter 11 & 7. It was a time when the economy turned around just like it is today. These moments are all great learning experiences and I wouldn't change what happened in the past one bit. There's a lot of valuable lessons to be learned through this process and it will only help you in the future when the economy turns around. You will be a much stronger business woman from all of this. It's not an easy time and I remember the pain clearly, but remember what I said above, "I wouldn't change what happened" because it taught me sooo much! After it's all over and you can breath a little, you will look back and realize its valuable lessons that you were taught. I have always admired you and I know that you will make a major comeback in the future, just like I knew Martha Stewart would do. Best regards, Rita
ReplyDeleteAlthough never was able to join in with the shabby chic shop experience I defo had all the books and wanted to be at each and every market with you.
ReplyDeleteI will always support your ideals and hopefully some of it rubbed off on my home too.
Return to your roots your link with us all are through your books so keep them coming.
Good luck and best wishes from Ginny x

We have been so blessed to have you teach us the beauty of making shabby and discarded new and valuable. These are the lessons we will all be needing now more than ever. Please keep up the blog. We want to be there with you. xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteyour style of child-like beauty, gentleness and softness has touched the lives of so many people all over this world. this is heartbreaking news to me, that your business is struggling, but i know it is a terrible sign of the times and we are all caught up in this discouraging experience. however, i know that your incredible sense of beauty and style will not end because you have affected so many people all over the world with your philosophy of loveliness and grace. it will carry us all through this; without your wonderful influence, the world would not be so beautiful. i will pray that you will be able to start again and anew and we will then all be happy again. you are such an angel to this world, Rachel!!
ReplyDeleteDebbie Schramer
I can share what you must be feeling only on a smaller scale...I was the proud owner of a little home and garden shop in San Diego and loved every single minute of it for four years...I closed this past November simply because it was hard to justify keeping a small business in this economy going with an uncertain future. My shop was a source of joy to everyone who walked in and it took care of itself up until about August when business took a sudden turn. For me it was a hobby and love of mine and not a necessity to stay open. I do believe that another door will open again in a better time for all and I wish you much love, faith and joy in all you do. You are truly an inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry that you are having to downsize. But I really feel like Shabby Chic will still be around for years to come...around for your children to inherit. Maybe it will look different, but it will still be from your vision...you are a visionary that saw something that was needed..recycling the good, making it useful again.
ReplyDeleteYou brought back feminine, you talked about appreciating the bones of a structure...all things that were being lost with all the new housing developments and all the excess junk that everyone was buying. You brought us back to our history, and to a more ecological way of decorating and living!
Okay....I could go on forever...
I wish you the best of luck, I know that you will still be around sharing your wonderful ideas with us! karen...

ReplyDeleteWhat sad news....it is just another sign that all over the world people are struggling. This I know. You have shown the world how to take something old and used up and turn it into an item of beauty and it only makes sense that this idea of yours will only become more popular as more and more homes have to make do with less. I know that you will restructure and come back with even more beautiful ideas! Keep your chin up and keep prayin!

ReplyDeleteLoved your books, super loved your zest for finding pretty things amongst trash at flea markets.
ReplyDeleteYou really did change the decorating world, and I thank you.
BUT- as an everyday person, I couldn't afford one thing in your store. Everything was beautiful, but not attainable.
HOPEFULLY- you will come back stronger than ever- and remember, even the most poor of us, still want to take something pretty home when we shop your stores.

ReplyDeleteKeep your chin up Rachel. It's just a step in another direction. Shabby Chic is here to stay!
ReplyDeleteEveryone is pulling for you - how can we, as women, do without our Rachel? Do without our dose of shabby chic beauty on an almost daily basis? You brought us Shabby Chic. You did this. Until I purchased your 1st book, many years ago, I didn't know what could be done with my old, shabby and pretty things. You gave/give millions inspiration. We were there for you at the top, and we're here for you now. You must be a General in your own Army - forge ahead and make a new path - but don't ever give up hope. There is always another path than the one we are currently on, and one that is usually hidden. Kick up the leaves, and you'll find it. Good luck to you Rachel ~ We couldn't live without you dear :) xo
ReplyDeleteif there's anything we've learned from Shabby Chic, its that all things gain character with a bit of wear'n tear. After this tumble-through-the-dryer, may you come out tinted in pretty pink Rit.
ReplyDeleteHI Rachel,
ReplyDeleteLong time admirer and fellow sufferer. I too have felt the effects of this economy on my business as well. Since I am in the business of licensing my designs on products naturally when retail is bad my job suffers. I am in the mind like you that things will prevail and have to for I choose never to give up or except failure.
I am sure it was no easy feat to file CHapt 11 but necessary to stay afloat and save your precious company. These are the times when you are forced to reflect and renew what was important in the first place, and when the fog clears there will be a better sense of self, business and creativity.
I am a firm believer that things happen for a reason and when we choose to not except it and go with the flow we are forced into a deeper decline. Since you are a woman of passion and creativity I have no doubt that you will prevail and come with it a new sense of it all, and with greater strength.
This is my hope for myself as well, and I am a A type personality so this is really hard for me. I cannot wait to see what creativity comes out of all of this for you! I am sure it will be more amazing than before and with a new sense of purpose!
I send you hope and love during your time of renewal!
My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Every Winter my mom and sister and I try to make a trip into your Chicago store. We've built some wonderful memories around those special days.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry to hear about the bankruptcy but you have an incredible foundation to build on yet again. I'm excited to see what's in the future for Shabby Chic!
Praying with you. Blessings... Polly
As a big time fan in the midwest, I feel just terrible. The economy is taking it's victims and not being very nice to those who do not deserve it.
ReplyDeleteAs a wife of an accountant with a large corp...I hear it all the time. We have to get back to fundamentals. Make your focus small and keep your eyes on what made you made you who you are today.
Take it back to your core supporters and you will come out the other end of this with only a few bruises.
As a person who is trying to get her feet wet as a small business owner, this economy really stinks and frustrates all of us.
You will do it...I know. Remember focus on your strengths!

Prayers sent your way
All Shabby Chic fans need to get out and go to your nearest Shabby Chic store and buy something. I did. Support, support, support, even if it is a little thing. You can phone your nearest store and they will take your order. Some things are not available, so it is best to call. You can buy the floor samples. I was lucky as they had what I wanted.
ReplyDeleteI had been waiting for a number of years to buy that "dream" Shabby Chic item, and I realized that if I just waited and waited, I may not have the opportunity to buy it. Do we all want to wake up one morning and find out that the stores are all gone? Sure, you can buy sheets and furniture and dishes and lights at other places, but Rachel Ashwell's things really are special.
The stores are so beautiful and there are things for the big spender and there are things for those with a more modest budget. ( No, I don't work for them! I am just a huge fan and I really want Shabby Chic to reorganize and be successful again.)
Keep calm and carry on!
Rachel,
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to hear this news..... I want you to know how much I have loved your style and fresh approach to things. I have a few of your books and have really enjoyed dreaming of having a home that looks like yours. You are so creative and talented...you will come through this tough time even better! My best wishes are for youa and your family. :)
Rachel,
ReplyDeleteI think you are a talented artist, designer and stylist. The reorganization of your business doesn't take anything away from who you are innately or your considerable talents and gifts in design. I hope to see a new book from you very soon.
I am very saddened by the news , but I know you will be back. I have a lot of your Target line items and a tote from your regular line and I love it all! Keep on fighting and you will prevail!
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Dear Rachel,
ReplyDeleteYour words are so touching and heartfelt, I know you will make it through these tough times and come back stronger than ever. All of your loyal customers will be with you and your family all the way.
With love
Lisa
